Fat / flabby upper arms - sleeveless dress....

Will a heavy fake tan do the job - or should I invest in those mesh sleeves?

Any other tips?

My friend had a brachioplasty. I'm considering it too!

StrikeForever · 21/06/2025 01:39

I have learned to accept my arms for what they are and wear sleeveless when it’s hot.

Tinytotdriver · 21/06/2025 08:27

I’d just tan everywhere and then add some highlighter/shimmer anywhere you want to highlight. Maybe cleavage or legs or collarbone and cheekbones? No one will be looking at your arms 😊

hannahisaspanner · 21/06/2025 08:28

Wear it anyway. No one else is interested in your arms I promise - and I say this as a fat girl with wobbly arms. No one has ever said behind your back that you’ve got a great personality but shame about your arms.

Doggymummar · 21/06/2025 08:29

I use spanx arm tights. They are a god send I have several styles they are better in Winter, but the white and lace ones can look nice in Summer too.

Wow who knew - sent me down a rabbit hole. Seems spanks are not doing them anymore - but lots of others that are post surgery compressors with a build in back posture corrector which looks great. Def good for wearing under clothes.

elbow length seems for flattering my dress is dark red so think the black would look odd and no other appropriate colours - so its dark mesh (non compressed) or a dark tan on the arms - although my decolage and face wont be dark tanned? Maybe a medium tan would be fine - mine are so pasty not see daylight for decades (i have lost 2 stone recently so being brave). I wonder if doing some sort of contouring on the arms would help or hinder?

If you're going to wear a layer, I'd go for a shirt/cardigan/jacket that fits with the dress. Unless the dress and overall look lends itself to the mesh sleeves (goth).
Otherwise, wear and enjoy and don't give your arms another thought.

SunnyDayDream · 21/06/2025 09:11

Throw some fake tan on and try not to wave too much. That’s what I do. Works a treat to avoid the flapping.

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 21/06/2025 09:14

I wear a large, thin cotton scarf shawl-style to cover my horrible upper-arms in summer if it is too hot for a cardigan or jacket.

MuddlerInLaw · 21/06/2025 09:14

@Kweenbeee neither of those extremely weird ideas would achieve anything positive. Unless you have some medical need for them, mesh sleeves would simply draw attention to your arms. And why on earth would anyone fake tan their arms and not the rest of their body or face?

Congratulations on your weight loss (assuming it was voluntary). Wear your dress with pride. In the longer term, yoga or weightlifting will help to tone your arms.

sonjadog · 21/06/2025 09:38

I was watching a video about this on youtube on one of these "how to dress for plus size" programmes, and the whole point was that covering up your arms in the summer actually draws attention to them, and it is better just to wear sleeveless as you want. They had lots of examples and it was true. The person looked better every time. So I say put on some tan if you think you need it, and go sleeveless.

Holluschickie · 21/06/2025 09:40

Mesh sleeves? Omg. In this heat? No one will be looking at your arms.
Fat flabby men walking around shirtless and we women are obsessing about our arms.

This.
Just get your arms out and be free, we’ll be dead one day!
Same goes for people who hide their legs and then get too hot

I dont understand the medical need for mesh sleeves comment?

The dress is formal for an evening event so mesh sleeves would be appropriate,

They look like this (I would have down to the elbow sleeves as they are more flattering)

I'd notice those more than flabby arms.

This is a good point - I saw something similar and it showed that a halterneck or showing more collar bone via the cut of the neckline was counter-intuitively much more flattering as it look away focus on the arms.

I'm having a hot flush just thinking about spanx on my arms!

They are nothing like the compression ones! Literally like 40 denier tights. I got mine from eBay just last week.

Kweenbeee · 24/06/2025 23:19

I have had my dress altered and it looks better - fake tan will help - has anyone any tips on fake tans and maybe even fake tan contouring or things to avoid so they dont look huge.

I was at an Indian wedding and the MoB and B wore what looked like beautiful very tight fabric components (compression wraps!) on the bottom half of their upper arms of their sari's.

I will be looking into those compression type undergarments for dresses in the winter - some come with built in back posture enhancer which would work for me.

This thread is wild. I don’t love my upper arms, but have been absorbing a lot of content on TikTok about just wear the bloody dress - and it’s so true! No-one cares.

OP, get some weights, get some fake tan, let your arms be free. Or get a dress with sleeves. Arm tights sound like an abomination. I’d notice those before I noticed someone’s actual arms.
