Ethical clothing

Inspired by the Shein thread let’s talk about which shops are better (at least as far as anyone can know as it is impossible to be 100% sure).

I have recently discovered Nomad Clothing and got some very nice dresses for work.

Where else have you found ethical clothes?

Second hand wherever possible, handmade where not. This works for everything except socks, which I go for either bamboo or merino new ones and try to look after them so they last as long as possible. That's how I do it.

Unfortunately even second hand now means sorting through the absolute sea of shein shite 😬

Usually I just direct people to:

Carrier Company

Community Clothing

There are so many others, but mentioning places like

Cawley Studios
La Fetiche
Margaret Howell

usually provokes outrage as people seem to want ethical clothing at Primark prices …

Kindred
Egg
Casey Casey

All of which I assume are not outsourcing their production way beyond Europe.

I'm sure they don't but any mention of Egg and Casey Casey usually provokes howls of outrage.

Ok I am going to risk being totally dismissed here but as a short, curvy person who cannot manage anything oversized as I feel swamped, I think I would find it really tough to find things that suit on any of these sites.

palava dresses are lovely and would suit but they don’t fit into my fairly boring/mundane lifestyle.

i do have my eye on a couple of sweats/trainers on community clothing but everything else looks too boxy for me.

if someone has any recommendations for shops that tend to a more fitted (not tight!) silhouette that I can wash regularly and have a generous sizing option (I am a 16/18) I genuinely would appreciate it.

WTHJH · 15/06/2025 19:58

Including the Where-ever Slow and Sustainable list, but not including Dicks of Edinburgh (which has multiple brands) there have been over 40 brands listed here, @myladyjane - so it does seem a shame that you haven’t seen so much as a beanie, or a vest that might work for you!

But there are endless other brands that haven’t been mentioned yet …

They're cotton or viscose dresses which wash well. You [general you] can do the school run/ supermarket shop/ go to pub/cinema/ leave the house in them equally as well as in a pair of jeans

myladyjane · 15/06/2025 20:05

If I wore a beanie I’d look like a hairy egg to be fair…..

there are bits definitely. I am not saying there is nothing by any means - colourful standards is on the list and there are some good basics on there albeit I just cannot find the colour of zip up hoodie I want frustratingly.

I was just asking if anyone had any suggestions for places that may work a bit better on my body type.

myladyjane · 15/06/2025 20:10

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle I thought very long and hard about the kingfisher jumper earlier this year. So long and hard it sold out by the time I went back to get it.

there are a couple of pairs of trousers there I am thinking about but have been changing sizes so not at a stage to commit yet. But in the list

myladyjane · 15/06/2025 20:18

Thank you - there are a few possibles on there. I will bookmark for A/W :)

WTHJH · 15/06/2025 20:22

Unfolded do nice dresses, the dress is made after you order to minimise waste

Nudie jeans are great quality but needs trying on. It’s trial and error on sizing depending on the cut.

More places stock the men’s range, though everything is unisex.

Scimitarsandstars · 16/06/2025 12:17

Thanks for this thread. Nothing to add in terms of suppliers but this is really useful. I find the sheer number of posters ready to defend Shein, despite it being an eco disaster, quite depressing.

Stella McCartney is all about sustainable fashion.
