What colour is this hair and would you alter it?

This pics from over winter so it is quite a bit longer now. A bit of a natural wave which I occasionally blow dry. Slightly porous, depends on its mood.

It is in decent enough condition (for me!) so I worry about going lighter as it might wreck it? I have an active, outdoors lifestyle and don't want fuss.

I was pale ashy blonde until middle age, has grown darker since and looks different in every light so will add a few diff pics. I had it bobbed in my 30's and it isn't my best look.
Please don't insult me, I have never liked my hair, and I feel a bit down on myself lately so am after a bit of a self-care boost.... don't know whether to get my hair done or buy some new clothes? (apologies for the hats, they are my most recent pics).

Your hair is really nice, good volume and straight. You’re pretty
Colour is ash blonde
get a hair cut , long layers

CopperTray · 15/06/2025 18:19

I love the colour of your hair and agree with previous poster that a new cut might give you a self care boost.

There is nothing wrong with the style in those pictures, but I always feel good after a cut.

hairyusername · 15/06/2025 18:53

Thanks it is tempting!
My hair is super lightweight and some length helps to make it less poofy, if that makes sense?
It is looking so dry lately though and I only blow dry it once per week on a low setting. It is the same when dried naturally too.

Has any one had luck with Aussie moisture mask for porous hair?

@hairyusername I think your hair is pretty. I have very fine hair and have noticed a real difference using ColorWow products. They do a range of leave in conditioning styling products that are good

JDM625 · 15/06/2025 19:08

I'm not sure what your actual question is OP? I'd guess from pics that I'd call the colour light brown and no, I wouldn't try altering the colour? I'd think going lighter will damage it, if its already porous.

Is this your natural colour or has it been coloured? A good cut will make a difference, but unless you are trying to hide grey, I wouldn't colour it.

It's actually there, in bold text, in my post title Grin

And I answered the colour I thought it was and no, I wouldn't alter it!

I thought I was missing something! 😕

hairyusername · 15/06/2025 19:12

@JDM625 It is natural with a few bits of light grey, i think.
I've had bobs before and layers and looked like I'd put my finger in a live socket!

Your hair is a lovely colour OP. It’s a gorgeous cool ashy blonde and I wish mine was that colour! Have your tried any of the color wow products? My hair is fine but there is a lot of it and it’s dry and damaged but the color wow stuff (coconut cocktail, money mist and dreamcoat) make it nice and smooth but I also splash out on kerastase shampoo and conditioner which are making it more healthy again.

I tried the small Dreamcoat spray from M&S once, but it just lost it's power after a few weeks. Same with the famous elasticiser.
I do use the Nutritive Kerastase range and I think that's the best I can get, really. My hair just reacts to the environment and can look drier than it ought to be. It is very soft though. Spent a fortune over the years!

People with my colour seem to always want to dye it. I keep thinking about it every few years then back out. I fear the bleach, even if only a slight lift, would fry it.

A great mask for dryish, frizzy hair would be nice.

I would just grow it

ThePoshUns · 15/06/2025 20:01

Mousy brown

Chewbecca · 15/06/2025 20:05

I like it the colour it is!
I always think your natural colour is likely to suit you best too.

mrsm43s · 15/06/2025 20:11

what colour is this hair?

Mouse

would you alter it?

Yes, either blonde highlights or full colour darkening to Chestnut.

hairyusername · 16/06/2025 02:14

'Mouse' i kind of like that Grin
If only i was that cute.

Sunnyevenings · 16/06/2025 02:58

Your hair is light brown in that photo.

It’s hard to know whether to alter it as we can’t see your face/colouring (which is understandable obviously).
You said you have grey so I definitely would go lighter than darker for practical and financial reasons as it’s only going to get more grey which will be more noticeable on darker hair and you will end up spending too much time and money colouring it when it’s dark.

So go lighter and do grey blending.

hairyusername · 16/06/2025 08:12

Thanks!
I would def go lighter as face is pale, pale eyes/blue, light lashes and brows.
Only a few strands of grey, but if they all came in that white I'd leave it well alone I think. Will have to see how that pans out.

I had a full head of highlights for 2 years back in 2017 and whilst I only needed it redoing twice a year it absolutely wrecked the lengths. Took ages to grow out. I would have to cut it if I go back to that.

So I guess it's length or colour at this point.

CubanTody · 16/06/2025 08:16

It's a gorgeous light ash blonde - don't change it! Highlights will make it brighter/more yellow but natural light ash blonde is so much nicer.

Fratolish · 16/06/2025 08:19

That colour - a dark blonde - is very in at the moment according to my young adult daughter.

I wouldn't change it at all. The colour is lovely and it looks in good condition to me.

Koazy · 16/06/2025 08:23

I would have the dry ends chopped and add some blonde balayage. Would look gorgeous with your natural base.

Agree. It's dark blonde.

Sounds like you need moisture. Is there a Redken salon near you? If so or any salon selling the best quality products then go for a blow dry or cut and blow dry. Have a consultation first to get the feel of the stylist. And ask them about products for your hair type.

Do you use moisturising shampoo and conditioner now? You might need a regular treatment too.

hairyusername · 16/06/2025 08:36

Thank you. A lot to think about!

If I keep it like this I would definitely want to inject some moisture. It goes through moods where it looks drier than others. It was exactly the same when It was shorter. I use kerastase nutritive at the moment. Not sure what would beat that, but am looking for a decent hair mask.

hairyusername · 16/06/2025 08:41

Will definitely look for a decent salon. my old one closed during covid.

Look for reviews. Also maybe ask on a local Facebook group if you're on there? Although when anyone asks for hairdresser recommendations they're inundated!
