Help please - inexperienced covering grey, peroxide too harsh

Dear Folks who are knowledgeable about hair,

I’m in my 40s, have dark hair with greys popping through, and I’m very inexperienced with hair dye.

Last year, I had my hair dyed for the very first time. I’ve always liked my natural colour, so I chose just to stick with. I went to a hairdresser who selected each of my great strands and dyed just those (yes, it costed a fortune) - it turned out great.

Despite this, my hair went vvv dry and knotty.
i tried every manner of shampoo and conditioner, but nothing worked. It was so knotty. The change of shampoos gave me scalp trouble and even if I used a hair masque or leave in conditioner, because my hair is so fine, I it just gets v greasy looking.
So I had to wait for it to grow out.

So over a year later I’m quite grey - I need it dyed again. I’d like the same procedure, but a better, milder type of dye. I know Henna won’t really help me. Is there anything else I can use that will give me good lasting coverage?

Could you use a quasi permanent hair dye? Such as L’Oréal Diarichesse. The coverage is a bit more sheer but will do a good job at blending until it softly fades away, what is your hair colour ?
of course if bleach is used then there’s no way around it.
