Help style me!

I am useless at styling. I even did one of those personal styling consultations a few years ago and I still end up in a hoody and leggings most days.

Help me please!

I am a size 12/14, petite, apple, cool winter and 37 with a mummy tummy and I want to dress my age. Help me throw away the leggings and hoodies. I want to look stylish. I look at the other mums to see what they wear on the school run to get ideas but I don't think they will suit me.

I want ideas for the short summer we will have, and also autumn clothes please.

I rarely buy clothes because I hate clothes shopping. I feel deflated when nothing fits and doesn't suit me.

Thanking you!

Also can I wear high neck (not tight) oversized knitted jumpers? I love the look of them.

I imagine you’re not wanting huge jumpers right now, @Petitewinter? But there’s obviously no reason why you shouldn’t wear them.

More generally, why not think more about buying clothes you love, rather than trying to achieve some specific ‘style’?

To be honest you can only find what suits you via enthusiastic experimentation. If you don’t have the time or energy to be doing that constantly - a few well made, relatively simple, hard wearing and versatile items will make life easier.

Depending on your budget and preferences either

Uniqlo

or

Community Clothing

would be a good place to start. T shirts, trousers, denim skirts, chore jackets, raincoats - all you could possibly need for a school run life.

For more frivolous things,

Mango

has some gorgeous dresses right now.

One more thing: if ‘nothing fits’ you probably need to find a decent alterations service.

Is there a particular celebrity you admire, whose day to day style/look is the sort of thing you look at and think 'I wish I wore stuff like that'?

Thank you for replying.

No, I won't need jumpers now I'm just planning ahead for autumn/winter.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will have a look.

Maybe I should just try going for what I like. I'm not easy getting out of my comfort zone. I want to look well dressed and not a run down tired mummy which I really am!

I quite like Kate Middleton's casual styles.

There is also another type of style I like, but I can't think of any celeb that wears it. More dusky, cosy vibes, oversized plainer. Thinking about it, over sized I think would drown me being petite.

So two different styles 🙈

Pinterest is great for outfit ideas.
Make a style board and pin any outfits that you would actually wear, you'll then see what your style is as such and then you can look online/in stores or on vinted for items to make the outfits you like.

A must have for me is a good fitting pair of jeans(i like levis and abercrombie, can always pick up cheaply on vinted).

Petitewinter · 13/06/2025 11:04

Good idea, I didn't think of Pinterest.

Oversize is fine for shorter women. I’m only 1.6m, size 12 and I wear oversize a lot. Cos is good for that.
