Make up ages me....am I doing it wrong

Over the last year or so I've noticed that make up ages me. Quite considerably IMO. It makes me look rubbish.

I don't do anything different to what I've done forever, which is probably the problem. But I don't really know how to do it any other way.

I don't look horrendous without make up, but am very aware that people around me look well made up, and would like to be able to look like I've made an effort at least when I'm out.

I'm 43. Quite fair with lots of freckles this time of year.

Is this a known thing? Or just me? Should I change my make up routine now I'm older?

I’ve got a similar colouring to you, and I think it’s the black eyeliner that ages you.

I recommend Lisa Eldridge eyeliner in renaissance gold on the top lashes only. It really makes my eyes sparkle.

I also recommend her YouTube videos. She uses all sorts of brands at all price points and there are some good ones for natural make up and older skin.

Do you do the big brows that ages anyone.
I think the brow trend is fading out now.

A good moisturiser little bit of mascara and tinted cap stick is my make-up.
Most days its just moisturiser and plain chap stick.

Definitely no big brows! Glad to hear it's fading out.

I had exactly the same problem and basically started again with my makeup….
i now use a skin tint, concealer, soft brown eyeshadow as a liner, brown mascara, liquid blush, bronzer, highlighter and brighter lipsticks

I never found a tinted moisturizer that worked for me but a tiny bit of foundation mixed in with your regular moisturizer (about 1 part foundation to 4 parts moisturizer, mix them in your hand before applying) can smooth things out without being too obvious.

I hardly ever wear makeup these days (47) but I think I am going to try out some of the ideas on here, love the idea of olive green mascara and gold highlighter!

I splashed out on this recently. https://www.charlottetilbury.com/uk/product/unreal-skin-foundation-stick-4-fair
You sound similar to be in terms of colouring and makeup use (although I’m a bit older than you).
I find this stuff really easy to use and doesn’t make me look like a raisin rolled in flour- which is nice. 😁

4 Fair: Unreal Skin Foundation Stick | Charlotte Tilbury

Shop Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint in 4 Fair, a hydrating foundation stick for fair-medium skin tones to smooth and blur for a soft-focus glow.

I don't really wear much make up ever. Even less now I work from home all the time. But when I did and when Boots stopped doing their really good BB cream, I tried their tinted moisturiser and it's pretty good. Doesn't really give 'coverage' but gives me a gentle healthy glow and people often tell me I 'look well' when I've got it on!

I totally get where you are coming from, I’m 40 and I’ve definitely had to change up my make up routine.

I really recommend Eborian CC cream instead of a foundation - sometimes I still use foundation too but very little.

I have very dark brown under eye circles. I can’t recommend Huda colour corrector enough, I use the pinky peach colour, only need a tiny bit of concealer after that, mostly just to blend the colour corrector.

As little powder as you can get away with, I use the Huda one as it’s very fine but the Laura mercier one is fab too. They are expensive but last forever!

I’ve started to use cream bronzer and blush too, I found a brand called Rebecca Beauty (they are on instagram), her bronzing sticks and blushers are great. I also love the rare beauty liquid blushes.

A good setting spray also helps skin look less cakey, I use the Charlotte Tilbury one but the iconic London one is on my list to try too as it has a glow but not a shimmer apparently.

I'm in my 70s. I dye my eyelashes dark brown, tightline the upper lid with a dark brown and then put a smidgen of something more colourful on the top edge of upper lid and rub it away with my finger. I fill in sparse brows with a gentle brown pencil and brush it in. If I want to look more made up, I apply small blob of Trinny BFF with a round brush until it's nearly gone and then a slight dab of a Mac coral blusher (which seems to have a bit of a glisten about it) just above my apples. Bit of tinted lip balm and I'm a bobby-dazzler ....😅
