Dresses for hot weather

Where do I need to look?

Hot weather not just UK summer weather
Natural fabric that is not linen
Maxi or midi
Nothing tight but still flattering. Day dress that you can wear on a beach and in a bar so walking round so not see through.
Maybe sleeves of some sort. Not strappy anyway.

I like the Boden dresses but not sure about "double cloth" in hot weather.

Don't forget viscose wears well in hot weather and is easier to look after than 100% linen - I'm a recent convert and used to be v sniffy. There are quite a few thin jersey cotton dresses around that hang well and usually have a more fitted top with a highish waist and a looser skirt. If you see 'jersey' double check they're 100% cotton, I find them cool.

I do love her stuff and it always looks so good on everyone I see wearing it but I am a destroyer of clothes (spillages almost immediately etc) so I just can't justify that price I don't think. Annoyingly.

Yes Ive always avoided viscose before. Interesting. Will have a look. Any ideas as to where? I'm not keen on the current patterned dresses really.

There's a brand called Tridagna that I've seen in Spain - it does some nice floaty shirt dresses.

Personally I like doublecloth for the heat but I know the name can be off-putting 😁

LemograssLollipop · 02/06/2025 14:49

What is double cloth please?

And is viscose classed as a natural fabric?

April1stbaby · 02/06/2025 14:56

I’ve always found viscose quite hot and heavy. It’s very clingy too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/06/2025 15:02

I find linen and double gauze both too heavy in properly hot weather and viscose goes all limp and clingy. The thinnest cotton loose dresses are the best. I've got two from Zara.

Lifestooshort71 · 02/06/2025 16:47

"Viscose is a semi-synthetic fiber because it's derived from a natural source, but needs extensive processing using chemicals. It's a manufactured fiber, originating in natural wood cellulose, or protein, while synthetic fibers are completely man-made."
I find it comfortable to wear and it hangs well without being sweaty.

Viscose is a natural fabric and from an environmental point of view is better than cotton. The plants used for viscose grown on poorer quality soil, so don't take land out of food production which cotton does, and use far less water than cotton.

Doublecloth is a two-layered fabric - sort of two layers of thin gauzy muslin together. It often has a sort of puckered pattern - can look a bit like seersucker almost.

Looks and feels lovely but can feel very thick in the heat.

You might want to check out cotton voile or cotton poplin dresses, both are natural fabrics, breathable, and generally lighter than the “double cloth” Boden uses. Double cloth can feel quite thick in high heat, especially if it’s humid.

For shapes, kaftan-style or tiered midi/maxi dresses often work well, especially if they have some structure at the shoulders or bust so you don’t look totally shapeless. Cap sleeves or relaxed short sleeves are easy to find and give a bit more coverage, too.
Hope that helps!

A couple of summers ago I started a similar thread looking for “Breakfast dresses “ I.e. ones I could wear in the morning that were a bit smarter than a beach or pool kind of dress but that I could dress up for lunch or dinner with different shoes and accessories. Saved on packing too.

I love love love a good holiday dress 😁

Myoldbear · 04/06/2025 16:44

I think Aspiga have beautiful cotton dresses

chesschessandmorechess · 04/06/2025 16:59

Celtic & Co
I managed a full day at a theme park in 42° heat in this dress. The sleeves although slightly longer are lovely.
They have a lot of different styles, you can get money off your first order and a few dresses are in the Next sale too.

Would you think this combination in a dress would be sweaty? Viscose 75%, Polyamide 25%.
