Treatment for teen with acne scarring?

I'm not sure where to start with helping him. Ds is 16 he's on prescribed cream for his acne, he did the 6 months of antibiotics and his acne is so much better than it was. However he has some scarring, it's not the deep pitted type scars, it's more like red marks that look like spots but aren't. He's asked me what can be done as it's getting him down a bit.
Any ideas? I could only think of bio oil but I'm wary of any oil triggering the acne again.

They do fade, I had the same, but it probably took a couple of years. Would he be happy wearing a light colour correcting foundation or BB cream to just take the edge off without it being obvious or heavy on his skin?

A vitamin C serum might help but you might want to check with the dermatologist what it safe to use for his skin first. Also an SPF for acne prone skin so the sun doesn’t cause further damage and make the scars worse.

I highly recommend 47skin serum. It has been a game changer for my daughter. They used to do free trial sizes via the website, not sure if they still do.

Microdermabrasion is great for smoothing skin.

You need to wait till there are no more active spots and then go somewhere to get it done

You won’t be able to sort it out yourself with the immediate effect he desires so yes microdermabrasion or some kind of laser treatment. The professionals will advise

I would pay more for somewhere reputable as opposed to someone small and local. You want decent equipment etc

Lavendersong · 31/05/2025 12:14

you can smooth it at home using retinol and acids but that will take years

Start off for now with Alpha H Liquid Gold. It’s fantastic and works really well. Just apply to a small round cotton pad onto clean skin washed with Dermalogica Clear start or Dermalogica Soecial cleansing gel and wipe all over face - leave it on overnight do not wash it off - also no need to apply anything after either

Also go online to buy retirides - you can buy online from Spanish pharmacies

I also recommend when using these products he applies Biore spf 30 aqua rich during the day and once he gets a home wash it off with the cleansers mentioned

you can buy these from Superdrug and John Lewis

You can start with a cleanser, a spf and moisturiser for acne. So here goes my routine if you would be interested:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
LRP spf on my face
Cicaplast
Evening:
LRP moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

I knew I would get some good recommendations here thanks! I'm considering paying for him to see a dermatologist, but happy to try products first. Yes I've bought a good spf especially for acne prone skin (Eucerin oil Control). I must make sure he's using it!

Great! A good spf is required specially if its spf50 or more.

My sister took her daughter to have laser resurfacing. They went to a local plastic surgeon that was well known in their area, and very well respected. The treatment was extremely effective. She was (from memory) aged about 17/18 when she had it done.

I'm thinking we might end up going down that road at some point.

Yes I was going to recommend laser, but you'll need to wait until he's past the acne stage

(And it's pretty brutal!)

I think that would be the things gradually
