Maxi dress for wedding - too long?

I impulse bought a lovely Monsoon dress on Vinted that the seller warned came up long, but assumed I’d be tall enough to get away with it.

Sadly not, it trails on the floor and covers my feet. I don’t have time or inclination to have it altered - will I just look mad as if I’m wearing something too big, or will nobody really notice if I hitch it up when I’m standing? Is it just time to admit defeat and (unfortunately) throw it back? Any thoughts?

Would it really be that hard to hem it or get someone else to? Is it a tricky fabric?

sandgreen · 31/05/2025 01:19

It’s cotton/ jersey type so it’s easy to wear, but as such there is quite a lot of material to the skirt - not something I could tackle myself. As it would probably cost more to alter than I paid for it I don’t know whether to cut my losses.

Are you going to wear it again?
could you just cut it to the right length?

Esska type platform shoes? (Monsoon do a great Esska dupe which are really comfortable)

Could you bell it and pull it through a bit?

Get it hemmed at a dry cleaners. Getting clothes altered to fit is a great investment and can easily be justified on the basis that you bought it cheap from Vinted in the first place!

Thanks all, thought it might have been a silly question but you’ve given me some confidence to try doing something about it!

My niece bought a prom dress for a fiver in the charity shop. She spent 50.00 on alteration but it's still cheaper than most dresses, plus it's exactly what she wants plus saved the environment by not buying new. It's a win, win!

I'd wonder web it

Take some time and iron the hem up to the length you need. Once done get some iron on hemming tape and iron that on to hold it. Then i would take the time to sew the hem to really secure it. Just done this with a LTS dress!

Could you wear a belt with it, and use the belt to hitch it up a bit? (And what's the technical term for that?🤣)

These are a lovely suggestion, thanks! New shoes weren’t part of the plan but that style does look good 😁
