Where does high quality these days

In the past I used to shop at M & S, Debenhams etc. I have a pair of M & S trousers that are SO well made, but have been in now and it is full of thin fabrics, shoddy buttonholes etc. I've had some bits from Hobbs which I am pleased with but there is a lot of polyester in the workwear. A couple of days ago there were some lovely trousers in Gant that suited me and the fabric was nice quality but I'm not paying £100 for something with loose threads. I know linen slubs but some of it was bobble central. I did get some bits from Uniqlo but more casual pieces.

Am I stuck to having to go higher end such as Ralph Lauren & Max Mara or are there still high street alternatives. I'm only 5ft 3 so often need petite fittings.

Benetton, Anthropologie, Reiss, Jigsaw

Comefromaway · 28/05/2025 14:05

Is Benetton still going?

I have a Reiss skirt but it is dry clean only and hasn't lasted well although I love the style.

I thought Anthropologie seemed a bit shoddy when I last looked but I might just have been unlucky. I have looked at Jigsaw but not seen much I like in there so far.

It is! It's good for basics and I have a few pairs of their trousers that I'm pleased with. New Collection Women's Apparel | Benetton

Arket, Cos, Uniqlo and Jaeger.

Anyday and all the other John Lewis own brands punch heavily above their weight in terms of quality, cut and fabric for the price.

Tu clothing is startlingly good.

Finery and Nobody’s Child dresses wash well.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 28/05/2025 14:16

Uniqlo( even their underwear is second to none)
This is one of the reasons I buy lots from Vinted.
Fat Face Sway slim jeans for £4 are frequent buys.
Love White Stuff and Alice Collins Linen too

I've never seen a Benetton shop since the 90's. It seems like there is one in York. I will be in York over Christmas so it might be one for the future.

Unfortunately feel that Cos is made for taller people with broad shoulders. I was in there last week and tried on a lot of items and they all swamped me. I really liked the cut of some of the Nobody's Child dresses I tried but the sleeves do nothing for me. They didn't have the trousers I liked in my size & I didn't pursue it because I found some similar in Uniqglo.

I've shopped at Sainsbury's Tu for years but have noticed a deterioratio in quality recently. The trousers I bought faded and the cardigan bobbled after only about 12-18 months. To contrast I have a Debenhams and a George cardigan from 8-10 years ago still going strong.

I've never heard of Finery. I do live in a city with no department stores or proper clothes shops so I have to travel to Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham or Liverpool to find anywhere.

Yes, I did find some stuff in Uniqglo last week. I used to like Fat Face but have found they have gone a little old fashioned these days. White Stuff makes me look fat. I don;t know why.

I love All Saints but everything is expensive dry clean only so not really practical for every day. The clothes are delicate and I've had t shirts come in holes.

The things I am looking for at the moment is

Summer trousers (light coloured linen/cotten/work trousers)
Knitwear (cardigans/jumpers you can wear with trousers and top or throw on over a dress on cool evenings
Long (petite fitting) summer flowy skirt (preferably cotton)
Slim fir trousers to replace a pair I had from Mango where the zip broke after only 12 months (preferably with belt loops)
Black work trousers to replace a pair from M & S that are 12 years old.

I like Lucy and Yak too, their trousers come in petite and their tops and cardigans are nice + wash well. They've a shop in Manchester Lucy & Yak | Independent, Organic and Recycled Clothing

Comefromaway · 28/05/2025 15:06

Sorry, I'm sure it looks great on you but I really do not like Lucy & Yak. Aside of my dislike of dungarees I feel like I'd be wearing the curtains my mum had in the 70's.

I like Baukjen. I have found their clothing lasts and I like the environmental credentials. Not cheap but as I said I find they last well. I have items over 8 yrs old and they are still fine

😄I have to say I'm not keen on their dungarees or brighter prints either- I've got a couple of plain blue pairs of jeans from there and this cardy Robyn - V-Neck Cotton Cardigan in Green Cedar Ombre – Lucy & Yak

Trousers and plain knitwear, here:

They don’t do ‘flowy’ - but their denim skirts are beautiful.

Comefromaway · 28/05/2025 15:26

That cardigan is quite nice. That shade of green doesn;t suit my colouring. Green is one of my favourite colours but either dark green or emerald green, but I like the general style of it.

For jeans I am currently wedded to my Levi 724 (after a huge search to replce the discontinued M & S jeans I used to wear)

Grannycake - for some reason I though Baukjen was fast fashion. I've seen them in JOhn Lewis I think. Just had a look on their website and there is a skirt I like & some nice looking trousers

Never heard of them but I like the look of some of the knitwear.

Baukjen, arket, some everlane.

Comefromaway · 28/05/2025 15:51

I didn't know Everlane was in the UK. Are they in a department store as I can't see any Uk stores listed.

vinavine · 28/05/2025 15:52

Not sure if it's because I'm getting old but we have a new Sainsbury's superstore. I bought some gorgeous quality dresses and tops for not very much at all. I was seriously impressed and went back the next week and bought more!

vinavine · 28/05/2025 15:55

I bought some linen barrel legs in Tu and lightweight denim wide legs. Didn't like any of the knitwear. I have a gorgeous fine knit cardigan from Uniqlo years ago that I need to replace, it's so practical.

I don't really wear long skirts so can't help you there.
