There is an article in the Times at the moment listing some old school beauty classics - anyone have anything to suggest for a Mumsnet list?

All mine are the unglamorous workhorse ones, I flit around with the more expensive stuff, interestingly.

Neutrogena hand cream!
The Body Shop hemp hand cream
Blisteze, the original one that’s always unavailable these days
Pantene shampoo and conditioner

She has Ren products on there and they’re going out of business which I’m sad about.

Knackeredparquet · 27/05/2025 23:05

Keep coming back to Nivea face cream- it’s amazing.

Shea body butter from the body shop.

overeater · 27/05/2025 23:30

Another vote for Nivea. Lovely stuff. Face cream - the blue one and I also love the shower cream.

ColinCaterpillarsNo1Fan · 27/05/2025 23:35

I've been using NIVEA face cream from the blue pot for the past 40 years. I look younger than my 35 yr old colleague eventhough I'm waaay older than her.

Ditch the fillers and the botox and switch to nivea, I swear by it.

I do wonder if all the various fancy ingredients in the products I try are actually just over complicating it. Maybe I should go back to basics and try this!

I find that Nivea too thick and greasy.
I love Aveeno cream and palmers coco butter really nice on the face

Oh no! I love ren, is there a sale? I'll be stocking up. There's both a face mask and a tonic that I swear by!

IamChipmunk · 27/05/2025 23:56

Does makeup count?
Lancome Juicy tubes! My favourite was/is Caramel Gospel!

Never found anything as nice, just use Maybelline lipgloss now but its not as nice.

I know… I think they’re going for a few more months so maybe closer to the end, or maybe it will get rescued? I think Unilever buying them was the beginning of the end..

God i love the smell of that stuff. Simultaneously reminds me of my long dead great auntie but also my own face aged 12 (probably nicked some off her). Might splash out for memory's sake. It's so thick too iirc

Lots of Ren products in TK Maxx.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/05/2025 08:50

Palmers cocoa butter hand cream and body cream. Smells great and really deals with dry skin well.

I did a course on making your own cosmetics ( which doesn’t make me an expert by any means)

But the tutor was really interesting. She said the main active ingredient in moisturiser is glycerin which is a humectant ( it helps retain moisture). It also costs pennies.

skincare is fantastic nowadays and one of my favourites is Dior which is ££££. But that’s the one standout for me. I also love Elemis marine cream.

I think that a good quality but inexpensive moisturiser can get you 97% performance. The expensive stuff gets you the extra 3%, but you are paying £££££s more for a very tiny improvement. In my humble opinion!

I am still a sucker for skincare of course, but keep coming back to Nivea!

familyissues12345 · 28/05/2025 10:21

I love Nivea soft and bought a few tubs when I heard they’d changed the formula. Not looking forward to when they run out, as I’ve heard the new one isn’t as nice?!

I love the blue tub, but it’s too thick for a face cream

CuriousKangaroo · 28/05/2025 10:32

I love the Elizabeth Arden advanced repair serum. I have tried so many other more modern and new serums but always come back to this one.

CrotchetyQuaver · 28/05/2025 10:36

I really miss Ann French cleansing milk, I've never found anything that works quite as well, but have settled on micellar water in its place.

OhBow · 28/05/2025 10:49

Vaseline!

Max Factor facefinity powder. I've been using it for decades, it's like a light foundation but less messy as it's not liquid. You'd think it would be too matt, and it probably would be for most people, but I'm still oily at nearly 50 so it's just right for me

Palmers cocoa butter, adore it.

Knackeredparquet · 28/05/2025 13:18

@OhBow another vote for Palmers cocoa butter- it’s amazing

Halfhardy · 28/05/2025 14:03

Ponds cold cream, or better still Boots own brand. Cheap, easy and reliable for removing make up and moisturising at the same time.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 28/05/2025 14:20

I have sensitive skin and I rate products without fancy ingredients.
Cetaphil for example contains Niacinamide and Glycerin for around £8
At 60 I'm frequently told I have great skin
in my opinion Less( ingredients) is more.
Vaseline is a brilliant multi tasker( protects leather and cures wood scratches too!)

MargaretMarigold · 28/05/2025 14:24

My mum removes her makeup with baby oil, washes her face with baby soap and has used Avon moisturiser forever. She’s 86 and looks great.
