If you are “Vogue” level stylish, what fashion / style media do you follow?

This is light-hearted… I have subscribed to Vogue and while I enjoyed the images and content, I have struggled to translate it into inspiration for my real life style. I have now subscribed to Red for 3 months - fashion content is more relatable.

Just wondered where those who follow high fashion and feel confident in their style draw their everyday inspiration to stay current. Specific magazines, websites, influencers? Thank you.

Following! Xxx

I think it’s in the little details that make Vogue style relatable and having an awareness of what is next. For me it’s knowing what is coming in terms of colour and style and trying to thrift it before the season as well as knowing the look I want to go for and how to achieve it. I am very much into Chloe at the moment in terms of wide leg jeans and boho top and have been able to do this easily enough. I don’t care if anyone else can see it, so long as I do is all that matters.

I don't read Vogue as much as I used to but I still enjoy their batshit fashion shoots just for the spectacle. I'm not sure you need to translate it yourself - the high street does that for you, e.g. &Otherstories and ruffled shirts or M&S and those bubble midi skirts.

I still have a wander round a physical brand of H&M every so often, not to buy but to see what they're selling and how they're styling it (because if they're stocking it in my pretty poxy local branch that means they're confident it'll sell).

In terms of magasines, Hello and (I think) Grazia do fashion supplements every few months which are largely about filtering out the key looks and where to find them.

Or I find websites like Collagerie and Newinstyle are a good way of getting an overview.

Can't help with influencers I'm afraid as I don't follow any. https://www.collagerie.com/en-gb

I’m afraid I find ‘relatability’ a bit off-putting!

I generally want to know what designers are doing at full stretch, as it were. New shapes and proportions and colour combinations and proposals for how women might move about in the world right now.

Not to be too literal about it - for about forty years Vogue magazine was my starting point - but now I spend more time on the Vogue runway app (now confusingly also called simply ‘Vogue’). The great thing about being in constant ‘contact’ with such a huge range of designers, through the runway photos and videos, and interpretations of how the clothes can be worn, through the ‘street style’ section, is that I’m constantly reassured that anything goes.

For some people I know that means dressing with intent - I admire that approach but am far too lazy to follow it. For me it just means buying, whenever possible, things that seem really outstanding, and that I can see myself wanting to wear for years. Generally I see a new thing fitting in with what I already own - but it isn’t with the intention of creating a recognisable style - more just to enable me to leave the house clothed!

I don’t follow influencers (though I can hardly avoid the odd instagram post); I do spend half my life browsing websites: multibrand platforms, emerging designers, Zara. Every week the FT in particular introduces me to new sources - I honestly love them for how they’ve kept my horizons broad over the past more than thirty years. Though obviously if I’d spent more time on stocks and shares and less on obscure craftspeople I’d probably have more money for clothes …

Presumably you’d like a few more responses, @TropicanaWiFi? Grin

TropicanaWiFi · 29/05/2025 16:05

@MetaDaughter I have downloaded Vogue app after your post, spent inreasonable amount of time on it already, donated my Hobbs pencil dresses at last and removed a graphic t-shirt from my Next basket. You have given me exactly what I needed, thank you. 🌷🌷🌷

I'm interested, too! Is the Vogue app free?.

TropicanaWiFi · 29/05/2025 16:16

Yes

Yes

Thank you - just to be clear, which one? There appear to be several.

Let me know what you think - I have scrolled through Dior show over morning coffee, over 80 images, and was really inspired to make an effort with how I looked. It’s so beautiful and faraway from reality but still made me put a lipstick and a silk shirt for WFH.

I used to be like this, I was so thin, I never ate, I ironed everything and I always spent at least an hour getting ready to leave the house, despite planning what I was going to wear the night before, including, bag accessories etc. I also made a look my own and never wore black. I bought clothes from mainly rummaging though top notch vintage, sample sales and little boutiques. I also spent many a day at the hairdressers.

I'm now fat, never iron and I get ready in under 10 minutes and wear things my younger self would have cringed at, for example gym leggings hours before I attend the gym. Looking apparently effortlessly chic takes work.

Corinthiana · 29/05/2025 16:29

Will do! I've always loved fashion and style, but have lost my mojo a bit. Looking forward to it!

SuperGinger · 29/05/2025 16:29

Always wear clothes that are fitted and skim never tight

MetaDaughter · 29/05/2025 16:36

Well, I think I’ll print out your reply and frame it, @TropicanaWiFi! Grin

It’s occurred to me that I ought to come back and inform anyone interested that the Vogue Runway app started charging for full access as of August this year. I think it was about £19 for an annual subscription, which I paid straightaway as I couldn’t really bear to be without it. But still …

Here’s a critical article about the change:
