Outfits for when it’s warm and wet

Off on a city break next week and the forecast is warm but with the chance of frequent and heavy rain- the absolute worst weather to dress for!

What would you pack?

Define warm. Warm or hot? (It makes a difference!)

Overtheatlantic · 25/05/2025 17:25

Focus on your feet. Take a couple of pairs of shoes in case your feet get wet. Light weight trousers that dry quickly and a rain jacket? Hat of your preferred style.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/05/2025 17:32

I don’t have any warm weather hats.

Can wear leather trainers or DMs.

About 18 degrees, I think.

If it’s only 18 degrees (so room temperature pretty much), I’d just take a waterproof longish coat with a hood (such as the ones by Rains) and wear water resistant shoes/trainers. If you’re in a city, it’s not like you’ll be stuck outside in the rain all day. Very easy to pop inside somewhere for a coffee etc if/when it’s pouring down.

I've got a black pac a mac thing or a trench coat with storm wear. I think it will be too warm for the latter, annoyingly.

I bought a special very lightweight raincoat for just this scenario. I wear a shirt and trousers (or a dress) as normal, then the light coat over it. Mine was Barbour Seal in pale pink (bought summer 2023)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/05/2025 19:55

I haven't found a lightweight raincoat that I like, after buying quite a few. All too heavy and look silly with most of my clothes. Sigh!

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious but
why not carry a telescopic umbrella?

Kheilandi · 25/05/2025 21:22

I'd just wear whatever I wanted to wear and chuck a small brolly in my bag.

NuffSaidSam · 25/05/2025 21:32

Mild and wet is standard UK weather. What do you normally wear?

SwedishEdith · 25/05/2025 21:39

Uniqlo Blocktech jackets and coats are perfect for warm wet weather. 18 degrees isn't that warm so you shouldn't overheat in them.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/05/2025 21:39

Obviously I will have a brolly. I'd normally just wear a denim jacket and take a brolly but the forecast is really bad, and we'll be walking around more and for longer than we'd normally do at home.

I have a mac thing that is gathered at the waist and goes to about mid thigh. If it’s raining I wear a baseball cap and sunglasses if needed - I hate hoods and can’t be bothered with umbrellas, so this works for me. Non-fabric trainers and chinos or skinny jeans.

That's what my mac thing is like. I hate it, but think I'll have to take it. I also hate hoods - I have a very small head and they never stay up!

Same! Every hood I own is way too big, they drive me mad.

Floisme · 26/05/2025 10:46

I'd take the DMs rather than trainers. Admittedly I don't like trainers so I would say that but DMs aren't scared of rain plus they're generally pretty stable on wet, slippery surfaces.

18 degrees still sounds like jeans temperatures to me but I'd take an extra pair and leave any pavement sweeper styles at home. I'd think about a midi skirt except it doesn't sound quite warm enough for bare legs.

I'd just pick the coat I like best and to hell with it. My favourite coat at this time of year is absolutely useless in bad weather but great for swanning around and posing, so I take it because, as far as I'm concerned, swanning around posing is the whole point of a city break. I do carry a wax cotton bucket hat in my bag though, the kind DCI Vera wears. You may think that would detract from the posing and you would have a point, but my theory is that, when it's raining hard, everyone looks down, not up. I don't own an umbrella, cannot stand them.

Hopefully it's a city with decent transport and coffee shops if all else fails. Have a good time.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/05/2025 11:28

Thanks! I’ve decided to swan around in my trench coat with not much underneath. I might have a look for a hat when we get there.

How about a rainproof poncho of some sort? Maybe a bit cooler as air can get in?

That and a small umbrella as you don't like hoods

I’ve opted for jeans, DMs, T-shirt and trench to travel in; packed a clingy black sleeveless midi dress and a printed black midi skirt, plus black vests and a cotton cardigan. Hopefully prepared for anything! DMs. Flesh coloured tights for the midis if it’s cooler.

The nasty mac thing is staying at home.
