Trouser for a city break

TealReader · 25/05/2025 07:43

I am searching for a pair of trousers for a city break in Scandinavia in early July. All suggestions welcome!

Something comfortable, ideally with a an elastic or partially elasticated waist. Cool toned but not black or navy. Cropped wide leg or barrel leg. Not 100% linen as I do not plan to do any ironing on holidays. I am 5ft 5, very hourglass shaped, size 14/16. I plan to wear with clogs, teva walking sandals or white low profile trainers. Elastic waist is to avoid waist gapping! I am building a quality capsule wardrobe so happy to spend up to £250 for a good quality trouser that will last. I would like this to be a smart piece which can be dressed up or down.

Considering Sweaty Betty barrel explorers in mineral beige but not sure if they look too much like joggers? Also I’m not terribly keen on high pleats as conscious of my very wide hips. www.sweatybetty.com/eu/shop/bottoms/trousers/explorer-barrel-leg-trousers-5059121997794.html?glCountry=IE&glCurrency=EUR&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21924524548&gbraid=0AAAAA9gu6CsxlWkENAlaoChZpnadeE1K_&gclid=CjwKCAjw3MXBBhAzEiwA0vLXQRd22wUG0YUoMUWqnFrJZqiTF_Kg-PpMozWoc6Xxrxidmrk1TpmsQRoCWkoQAvD_BwE

Koulibiak I know what you mean about barrel style but it’s a shape I really like, I’m not particularly trend driven and have been wearing wide leg for years before the current silhouette was in. Don’t think I owned any skinny trousers ever! I love Sezane but think their trousers are quite narrow through hips which won’t work for me.

Newme I tried those on in whistles and just don’t like the front pocket on me- I’m very conscious of my thighs. It’s a pity as otherwise they are perfect.

I’ve put in a Uniqlo order so will see how that goes!

Love my ninepines but returns were pricey.

These aren't the style you describe, but they are brilliant https://www.lululemon.co.uk/en-gb/p/daydrift-high-rise-trouser-regular/prod11860288.html?dwvar_prod11860288_color=69026. I've got an hourglass figure too, and they're very flattering (strongly elasticated waist so they fit snugly and skim the hips). They're sports material but pleated so they look tailored. They do need an iron after washing, but they don't crease while you're wearing them iyswim.

A brand to consider is pact

mainly because of the colour aspect but their pants are well made and the twill is very soft but holds up well. They’ve a sale on at the moment.

I love those Uniqlo trousers and have them in 3 colours. But I am 5'1 and they are the perfect length for me, infact a tiny bit too short if I wear them with platform trainers. If you are any taller I'd go for the longer length version of them. My DD who's a couple of inches taller than me wears them very low down on her hips to make the length work. I wear them at my natural waist.

Another vote for the H&M ones linked by 2 pps

They are fab, really comfy and floaty yet flattering. They're light fabric and go with everything so great for hols as could wear with heels and jacket in evening or sandals and trainers for day.

I have 2 pairs, I'm an hourglass 5'8" 12-14 and a M is fitted on waist and floaty on leg.

At £15 they're probably not a last-forever-investment-piece but have tranformed by summer wardrobe as hate shorts!!

I like the look of the Sweaty Betty ones, I have ordered as a result of this thread, will update once they arrive (I even ordered the trainers the models wearing.)

This thread is going to deplete my bank account. So many great ideas, really love the sweaty betty and Uniqlo ones, and I wasn’t even looking!

I would add that a lot of Norwegian women carry waterproof trousers in the way that we take a brolly with us. Quite common to see young, fashionable women putting on over-trousers in the doorway of stores before venturing out.

Despite living in Scotland I got more use of my waterproofs in 6 weeks in Norway than I had since buying them 2 years previously. Either that or take a longish waterproof jacket/coat.

I noticed that in Norway too - people really dress for the weather. Very unlike the UK…

I ordered and sent the Sweaty Betty ones back, I was expecting to love them but they looked cheap and the fit wasn’t good.

have you tried Beyond Nine? I got a pair of Huxley and love them, they also don’t need ironing.

TealReader · 27/05/2025 23:22

I’ve never even heard of BeyondNine, off to look!

Turtledove Kate trousers

Lucy and Yak Alexa trousers

These may both suit you.

Shambles123 · 28/05/2025 10:14

Next ones, Gap ones, I live in mid shin length chino type trousers in various shades of khaki in the summer.

I feel the cold and hate being wet so practicality comes before looking fashionable for me as well.

Uniqlo have some nice linen blend one with elasticated waists. Very comfortable.

I was going to suggest these.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 28/05/2025 22:04

I've got these

M&S chinos are good but come up a bit small on me, just to know. I bought a size 14 last year but they were too tight on the waist, and everywhere really, and other size 14s in M&S and other shops were fine. Kept them more by accident than judgement and have lost some weight. Now most of my size 12s are generous and the size 14 M&S chinos fit nicely.

ramonaquimby · 29/05/2025 13:44

some great links shared, thanks
I wasn't even looking for trousers!

Nitgel · 29/05/2025 13:48
