What’s your smart work outfit, that looks current?

I’ve been invited to a tour/meeting at the House of Commons in the next couple of months. I will have to travel for a few hours, so needs to be crease resistant and comfortable, I don’t know what to wear.

Suits and smart dresses don’t seem to be a thing anymore and I’d struggle in heels. Winter work dressing seems easier than summer. (I’m 40’s, tall size 8)

I usually wear wide leg trousers and nice top or funky T-shirt with suit jacket over the top. Don’t do heels anymore so do flatform smarter trainers or loafers. I’m mid 40s. Agree summer is harder!

Is it more a formal reception or a work event?

Probably flats either way, you may end up covering a fair bit of ground.

I'm 40s, size 8, 5 ft 5.

I wear wide legged trousers and a more fitted top (usually sleeveless as I have paranoia about getting sweat patches 😬) Some kind of cardigan or light jacket if chilly. Chunky smart leather hi tops.

I have never worn heels, even back in the 00s!

I wear ghost satin midi skirts with a light cotton jumper or long sleeve top in the same colour. Muted shades as I'm a bit old for bright colour drenching. (And in winter basically the same but with a heavier knit and opaque tights under the skirt)

Though if I were tall and slim like you I'd probably be going for wide leg trousers as well!

SiobahnRoy · 24/05/2025 17:24

Loafers, ankle length or wide leg trousers, fitted top

Wide trousers and a non matching blazer. Normally with trainers but for HoC I’d wear brogues. Not sure if brogues are very past it now but I still like mine.

The Houses of Parliament can be pretty drafty and chilly even during the height of summer.

I would second the suggestion of wide leg trousers, a top and a blazer you can take off if you get hot commuting. Flat shoes like loafers.

Thanks all, sounds like wide leg trousers are the way to go. I have some Clarks flatform lace ups that I could wear. Will look for a suitable top.

Thank you!
