Blazers with gathered sleeves? OK or not?

Looking for staples for work. I'm apple shaped and chat gpt says fitted blazers work. But do the rolled up sleeved ones look bad? Looking at a few in Zara.

I personally find gathered, or rolled up sleeves on jackets irredeemably naff - whoever they’re made by. But I would try not to judge a person for wearing them.

Agree with this

Yeah I agree with PP.

Also, whether a blazer will suit your body shape also depends on things like your shoulder width and chest size, not just if you think you're an apple. It is very easy to get the cut or fabric or fastening point wrong.

I am apple shaped with broad shoulders and have realised over time that I look better in smart, soft knits Vs a blazer. Also that single button blazers hit my tummy in the wrong place and make my chest look larger than it is. Having said that, I've just ordered a two button blazer in a soft fabric so we shall see!

So I think you're going to have to go to a shop and try loads on, to see if chat gpt is right!

I always roll my sleeves up. Don’t give a shit if someone thinks it looks naff. Just try some stuff on and see if you like it or not.

If we always listened to MN none of us would ever wear anything, because there will always be somebody who says no.

I’d personally care more about the fabric and fit, than if the sleeves are gathered or rolled up or not.

SpiralSister · 21/05/2025 07:22

See, I love a gathered sleeve. But then, I am an hourglass and they work on me. Rolled up sleeves, not so much.

I agree that the only way is to try on different styles, cuts and fabrics. They’ll be one for you somewhere, hopefully.

Rina66 · 21/05/2025 07:50

I love a gathered sleeve - full length sleeves just don’t work for me anymore unless it’s a tight sleeve

Gervhill · 21/05/2025 07:53

I don’t think they look bad at all, especially not naff.

Sure, but I’d want to be able to roll them up, or not, myself, not buy a blazer with ready-rolled sleeves. Agree with PP.

Oh well if Artificial Intelligence tells you it just MUST be true.

Good grief.

ballroomblue · 21/05/2025 08:15

Rolled up jacket sleeves remind me of Miami Vice. Yes, even after all these years.

dudsville · 21/05/2025 08:15

I really like the look of the roled up blazer sleeve.

Last year I bought a rolled-up sleeve linen jacket from Zara - I discovered when ironing it some time later that the sleeves can be unrolled! So mine is not a shorter length sleeve, just styled that way instore.

I roll my blazer sleeves up sometimes and it secretly makes me feel like Alma from 80s/90s Coronation Street.

I was always a bit jealous of Mike Badwin’s home drinks bar.

Apksbdv · 21/05/2025 08:44

I wear ones with gathered sleeves and I like how they look but also I’m someone who often pulls up my sleeves anyway (no idea why) so it saves me from ruining jackets

olivelime · 21/05/2025 08:52

Alma was a total fox!

Also 'irredeemably naff' made me proper lol.

I'm also a fan of a turned up sleeve and cuff. I think it looks better when you do it yourself though rather than a pre-gathered sleeve.

jeaux90 · 21/05/2025 13:33

I always roll mine but I’m in tech, always on the laptop and can’t stand clothes flapping around my wrists

LattewithAlmondCroissant · 21/05/2025 20:51

I like gathered and rolled sleeves on jackets and blazers. I’m short/petite so it helps me to tailor jackets which would otherwise swamp me!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/05/2025 20:56

I'm always suspicious that the sleeves are gathered because they couldn't reliably make a properly finished sleeve or wanted to skimp on fabric and are disguising it as 'style'.

DramaAlpaca · 21/05/2025 20:59

I'm always rolling my sleeves up, but I'd rather do it myself. I don't like the gathered sleeve look on me, I tried an M& S one and sent it back.

DiscoBeat · 21/05/2025 21:05

Just don't let your husband near them. My husband proudly straightened up the arms of mine because 'rhey got rucked up'. The dangers of being married to an engineer!

TheOGCCL · 21/05/2025 21:16

Pre gathered is naff to me, gathering/rolling yourself is good.

NeedForSpeed · 21/05/2025 21:17

I wore one today for a job interview. I loathe long sleeves, so these are ideal for me.
