Communion nightmare!

It's my daughters communion coming up & the unseasonal extreme good weather is throwing a few spanners in the works!

We went for a lovely satin layered dress with full underskirt - which now is looking like a bad idea. The underskirt is lined so I've already said no tights to help cool her down a bit.

We actually had a bolero on standby but that's deffo not required!

Any ideas for how to keep her cool as much as possible? Unfortunately due to where we currently are the dress will be on her + travel time longer than we planned & hoped for.

Would a sun umbrella help much do you think?

Where are you? The weather is supposed to break soon. She can take the dress off immediately after the service. Churches are usually quite cool.

thanks it’s this weekend & in Northern Ireland so not usually too warm! Hence the big unsuitable dress 🙈 I’m thinking even with the potential for rain it could be quite close feeling!

annoyingly we will need to get ready about 60 miles away and travel to the service & time wise won’t allow her to get ready once there so that’s a bit annoying. We also have a bit of a walk at the end from the bus terminal :(

I’m going to see if we can work without the underskirt to see if that helps with less layers or even just try to put that on at last minute

I just hope it doesn’t rain!

Can she travel in a simple outfit such as leggings and t shirt then quick change in the loo at the station or in the church?

Nomorecoconutboosts · 20/05/2025 23:18

The weather forecast is subject to change afaik especially more than 4 days ahead. Hope it’s a lovely day even if warmer than you anticipated. She could perhaps change soon after if she is really uncomfortable?

Annascaul · 20/05/2025 23:19

It’ll be a lot cooler at the weekend.
Why is she making her communion sixty miles away?? Isn’t it usually in your own parish church?

Sammy2k · 21/05/2025 12:23

60 miles away due to circumstances this week :(

We're literally due in not too long before the service unfortunately - I was hoping to let her travel in lighter clothes then get changed. I have got a few portable fans to help - but buses are stuffy at the best of times let alone when wearing a big dress lol. I bought a UV protection umbrella to try to keep her cool when outside.

The underskirt really makes the dress though so she's hoping to still wear that but it's a full body vested one which is probably the worst type to choose. The bolero will be solely on for photos & I'd say the gloves and veil also.

I wouldn't panic, check the forecast, it's looking rainy and mid teens over the weekend so you might need that parasol for different reasons.

purplecorkheart · 21/05/2025 12:31

Is there anyway you could afford to travel down the night before and stay in a cheap hotel/b&b?

BrightOrangeDahlias · 21/05/2025 12:35

How old is your daughter? Assuming she's about 10 she should be ok being a bit warm for a while, she's not a baby who can't regulate her own temperature! Just get her a fan to waft if it's really that bad!

I'm in NI, it's only meant to be about 18⁰ on Saturday. That's barely even t shirt weather.

This is a girl who overheats badly in her school jumper on cool days lol! Red face and all lol

I think the clear option would be to put her in leggings and a tshirt for the bus ride, take the rest of the get up with you and stick it on her before you go in. Nobody wants to spend a sixty mile bus ride dressed in layers of polyester even on a chilly day.

hopeishere · 21/05/2025 13:41

I’m in NI too unless she’s wearing a snowsuit she will not overheat this weekend. It’s supposed to be raining.

I'm looking at either getting an earlier bus to allow for this, or maybe staying overnight but my work patterns are all messed up this week.

I agree that's the part I'm worried about - even if its raining it will be really close and the layers will be horrible for her to stick.

When we bought the heavy dress we based that on living 5 mins away from the venue!
