Male style clothing for 14 year old DD

My DD much prefers wearing “boys” clothing. She finds it more comfortable and suits her style. The problem is that now her shape has changed I am struggling to find clothes to fit her. Wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of brands that are more unisex to look at. (We also need a 3 piece suit for a wedding for her)! Thanks in advance

I can’t see how this would be an issue.

RominaDina · 17/05/2025 08:08

Can you be more specific about what her style choices and colours are?
Aside from the wedding outfit, and for day to day, most retailers sell practical trousers, shirts and jackets for women. I have good trousers from JL own range, and I buy cotton shirts from Marks. I think there are lots of flat shoes available at the moment, as heels are dated anyway.
Is she looking for something specific?

RominaDina · 17/05/2025 08:09

There are loads of waistcoats available for women, so she could just team that with any trouser suit - the shops are full of those!

SummerFeverVenice · 17/05/2025 08:09

You will have better choices if you look at women’s clothing instead of girls/teen clothing. At 14 she should be grown enough to wear women’s unisex style clothes.

RampantIvy · 17/05/2025 08:10

Uniqlo?

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 17/05/2025 08:10

I can understand a boys suit not working if she is getting boobs and hips. Could you try a small size women’s 3 piece suit and get it shortened/taken in as needed? Maybe take her to try on some pieces.

Otherwise, there are loads of unisex kids clothes around - Next, George etc. or you could try getting some smaller adult sizes. Lucy and Yak have some great colourful unisex pieces.

There is plenty around. I’d post on style and beauty for specific recs

Doggymummar · 17/05/2025 08:11

Androgynous is probably what you are looking for. Drop it in Google and you'll find plenty of options

mumsnoangel · 17/05/2025 08:11

There are lots of women’s trouser suits which are plain and in dark colours. Definitely it has to be made for a woman otherwise the shape just doesn’t really work. Next suits are quite good value. We found a gorgeous trendy suit on a website called Twisted Tailor , but they seem to do fewer women’s suits than in the past. The other option looks quite good on a girl is tailored trousers and a waistcoat

RominaDina · 17/05/2025 08:12

Sorry! I don't know if that's the right link, but try Seasalt.

Daffodilsarefading · 17/05/2025 08:12

Have you tried m and s? They tend to have good quality, loser fitting styles. You don’t need to buy men’s clothes either.

Bailiwitch · 17/05/2025 08:13

Boys’ clothes? Think you’re going to have to be more specific, @dontstopmenow.

Can you not just take her to Primark or Uniqlo and let her choose whatever she likes?

JockyWilsonsaid · 17/05/2025 08:13

Unless she's got big boobs, most things should fit. DD is very androgynous and just buys all her clothes in men's departments..

Nitgel · 17/05/2025 08:13

Uniqlo

JaninaDuszejko · 17/05/2025 08:15

What size is she? My DD wore a lot of 'boys clothes' at that age. Generally clothes for boys are styled much more loose fitting than girl's clothes so she didn't have a problem. We used to go wild in H&M, it is cool enough for her and cheap enough for me to be happy for her to experiment. Would your daughter be happy with e.g. a pair of woman's wide legged trousers and a baggy shirt (which is what half of DDs friends wear when they are dressing up) or does she want something more tailored?

RominaDina · 17/05/2025 08:15

As pp have said, loose, androgynous clothing is very fashionable. I've just seen a lot on French Connection, Joanie and Marks, to start with. Just do a search with her to find her taste.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/05/2025 08:22

I found ASOS quite useful when my DDs were at that age for identifying what kind of things they liked because the search engine was so good. Vinted is good as well but Ithink you need a better idea of what you like. Now mine are a bit older there are constantly Vinted parcels arriving.

LurkyMcLurkinson · 17/05/2025 08:40

Check out the new kids clothes by someone called Erica at Asda. I follow her on insta and the clothes definitely look more unisex.

NCfor24 · 17/05/2025 08:47

I asked a similar question for my DD12 on Facebook this week and was recommended H&M. Got a cheap trousers/shirt/waistcoat combi off Vinted for an event this weekend (actually a Shein outfit) and she's super happy. She may just about be big enough for a size 6 women's but otherwise is in age 13.
Vinted is great for people selling whole preloved suits/outfits so worth a look especially if trying to figure out her style. My DD discounted a lot that fit her brief which proves I just don't get it!

OneOliveZebra · 17/05/2025 08:48

The hard part is finding anything that actually fits them if they’re too small for adult clothes but too big for kids stuff. 14 is a very hard age whatever your sex, gender or taste clothes

JaninaDuszejko · 17/05/2025 09:30

At 14 if short petite ranges will fit perfectly, another reason I like ASOS actually, they have a really big petite range.

ObstreperousCushion · 17/05/2025 09:37

Uniqlo is good for most things, but their women’s/girls shorts are still much shorter than their men’s/boys ones. And buying men’s doesn’t work, because hips.

Bailiwitch · 17/05/2025 10:02

My point was that (apart from dresses and skirts) the clothes at shops like Primark and Uniqlo really are androgynous, so she could choose from either female or male ranges according to her preferred fit. I guess that’s the same with H&M.

smallstitch · 17/05/2025 10:05

Uniqlo are pretty androgynous in style and they have lots of mix n match type separates that work well.
My sister wanted a suit for her wedding and because of her shape she did struggle - she ended up buying a man’s waistcoat in a bigger size and having it altered to fit.
I would recommend Slaters for this, they include alterations in the price and were really reasonable.
