Hi all, need help figuring this out!
I have for 10+ years been using a GHD Air 1.0 2100w, 1.54kg. It's been brilliant, to be honest, but its on its last legs.
After much research i decided to invest in a Parlux 3500 compact - 2000w, 505g.
I'm.... really not sold. It doesn't feel like 1/3rd of the weight of the GHD at all, it feels a tiny bit lighter but not much. I don't think it made any difference to drying time and my hair feels dryer than normal, so have had to keep reapplying hair oil.
What am I missing here?
And please recommend your hairdryers! (Particularly interested in what anyone whose previously used the original Ghd Air is now using! Have you gone to the Helios?)
I am very open to cheaper options.
I have fine hair where I'm growing out the tail end of a bit of bleach damage and is prone to a bit of frizziness.

I had a GHD air and hated it, switched a Babyliss for about £25 and it’s just as good.

I think it’s more in the products than the hairdryer tbh. Have you tried a nourishing blow dry spray instead of oil? I like Redken One United or Living Proof Restore Perfecting Spray.

I use a Kerastase heat protectant and a Swarzkopf leave in conditioner, then a touch of Kerastase oil on the end on any non-wash days for a bit of smoothing and thats all worked well with the GHD! Which Babyliss do you have, would you recommend it? I've been having a look and they've got some great looking options and if I can replace the GHD for sub £50 rather than £100+ then great.

This but I think they’re all much of a muchness tbh. Over the years I’ve picked up ones from the supermarket shelf and just changed if I fancy an colour change or when they wear out (they last at least 5yrs probably - I’ve not kept count). After I splurged on the GHD I was pretty miffed to find it wasn’t any different and it actually made my hair feel a bit clogged up!

FloraBotticelli · 16/05/2025 08:45

(Though to be fair i might have used a different spray at the time to cause the clogged up feeling with the GHD - I can’t remember!)

Expensive but I love my Dyson hairdryer (the actual dryer, not the curling wand). You can try them out in places like John Lewis if that helps.

LoafofSellotape · 16/05/2025 09:10

I have the Parlux Avylon and my hair dresser uses a GHD drier. The difference between a Parlux compact and the Avylon is a lot , really noticeable when I upgraded.

Pennyplant19 · 16/05/2025 09:34

I don’t think you’re missing anything, I think it depends on your hair - we’re all different. I LOVE my Dyson (hair dryer, not airwrap) I have lots of very fine hair and it’s in the best condition it’s ever been in.

Daisyvodka · 16/05/2025 10:29

I do hear amazing things about the Dyson, but then I also hear about them breaking down an awful lot and Dyson customer service not being amazing so that (and the price) has put me off a bit!
I will take a look at the Alyon again, thank you!

Love my Dyson, I have had it around 5 years now. Its used by all the girls in the family, we have hair ranging from short and fine, to very thick and curly (diffuser is excellent and fast) to thick, strait waist length. Everyone loves it.

Lucia573 · 16/05/2025 11:24

If you dry it straight, then the Dyson Airstraight (might have got the name wrong) is magic on my fine, bleached, frizz-prone, shoulder length hair. Expensive though.

I also love my Dyson and have had it for about 5 years without any issue. It was a gift but I would replace it if it broke, and I lament for it every time I have to use a different hairdryer.

LoafofSellotape · 16/05/2025 11:34

The Dyson does very odd things to my hair, sort of dries it out and the complete opposite to what it's meant to do. Saved me a fortune when I stayed somewhere with one as I was planning to get one!

Daisyvodka · 16/05/2025 12:18

I feel like I need to borrow a Dyson off someone now to try it out!

I had a Dyson for years. Switched to a Parlux which I love.

Saturdayrabbit42 · 16/05/2025 21:23

LOVE my Dyson hairdryer…total game changer…reduced frizz, enhance waves/curls and no damage…had mine for about 5 years but would buy again in an instant if mine stopped working!

fatgirlswims · 17/05/2025 07:50

try the revlon one step you can get it for £35.

I have fine hair too and I do thin the dryer makes a massive difference I always use a revlon one step

last week I was in a rush and needed to blast it off and ended up in a knotty frizzy mess!

LoafofSellotape · 17/05/2025 15:02

The one step is styling tool though not a dryer, you still need a driver to dry it before you use the one step or you'll wreck your hair long term. I love mine it's great but definitely doesn't replace a dryer.

MichaelandKirk · 17/05/2025 15:27

QVC often have a Dyson original hairdryer on offer and with no postage and the ability to return if you try it and don’t like it. Might well be on Easy Payments as well.

Be aware that if you return you will have to pay to post back which is likely to be £20 or so.

I do have a Dyson and it’s still going after 10 years. I particularly like the diffuser.

If I am honest it’s a silly price. Could do with taking off £100 but what do I know!

Funderthighs · 17/05/2025 15:29

I have a Diva Pro 2000 which is the best hairdryer I’ve ever owned. DD has a Dyson but uses mine on holiday and thinks it’s really good.

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 17/05/2025 16:58

You may have bought the wrong parlux. The basic models are same as any babyliss professional hairdryer IMHO.

Sunshineandrainbow · 17/05/2025 17:02

I love my ETI hairdryer
