Do clothes steamers really work?

I loathe ironing and have barely ironed anything this century but I've been buying more pure cotton/linen clothing and I'm looking for an easy way to decrease them after washing and then drying outside.

Does anyone use a steamer that actually works on cotton and linen?

I got rid of my ironing board when I moved home, intending to use my hand held streamer, a steamer pad and a small table top ironing board for my iron. It was fine over winter but I've caved in and bought a new ironing board as ironing my summer cotton dresses etc was such a faff. I find it much easier and with better results to get my ironing board out.

I second the Steamery one! Best wedding present we got. That being said I don’t know about things that have pleats or whatnot but generally for lighter items and shirts etc I find it great. We don’t even actually have an iron!

I got a small handheld one recently and I was just thinking what a brilliant and life-changing gadget it is. I am a bit neurotic about keeping clothes in pristine condition and I find it much more gentle on the fabric than ironing, while still getting out the creases. Really love it.

I’ve got a handheld streamer and it’s ok for light fabrics but more work with thick cotton. I don’t find it any less effort than getting the iron out tbh, and the iron does a better job. Plus I don’t want my home full of moisture vapour!

After saying I never ironed on a “ how to look polished” thread, I went out and bought a steamer, and I’ve had to eat my words!.
I have the Russell Hobbs Steam genie(£25) and am really impressed, especially as I wear linen tops in the summer.

I must not have the right technique as I think mine is a waste of money. Used twice with little results so it’s consigned to the back of my laundry cupboard,

You all have inspired me to try it out again. I’ll have to look into it more on YouTube.

It’s worth getting the knack of using one. I CBA with too much hassle but I find mine easy and quick to use
I hang my shirts on the door of the kitchen cabinet or wardrobe( on a hanger)
wait for it to heat up, then use it like a gun and don’t hold it too close.
The first time I tried, it spat water all over it, but I didn’t wait for it to heat up.
