Dark spot help for darker skin

I am mixed heritage (white/Indian) and have always had olive skin that tans easily and freckles. In the last few years they have sort of fused together and I have what I guess is sun damage/age spots on my cheeks and the bridge of my nose - looks a bit like a melasma mask, but I don't think it is. What can I use to fade them a bit - is there anything that works? I am a bit worried I will end up with paler patches if I use anything too strong. Also I have very fine dry skin and spend my life moisturising!

I have always used sunscreen and factor 50 for the last 5 or so years. I tried the Dermatica (?) subscription but it didn't seem to do anything but make my skin papery dry and itchy. This year I have already caught the sun and my skin tone is hugely variable.

There seems to be a new number 7 product out Future renew or something? Any clues most welcome!

I find that tranexamic acid works really well on my dark spots Superdrug sell a small pink and white bottle with a dropper, use twice a day (under factor 50 in the morning and beneath your nighttime moisturiser) and it fades them. I usually add a creamy as opposed to liquid/acidic serum at night between the moisturiser and tranexamic acid so that my skin doesn’t dry out.
I’ve tried loads, including the more expensive, and nothing works like this acid.

I hope this link works.

Acid try again!

PaperBlinds · 15/05/2025 17:20

Thank you @Userengage ! How long did it take to show results?

I would say about two weeks to see a difference and another four for it to be totally gone. When it has disappeared I do a bit of maintenance every now and then, especially in the summer as that when it seems to creep up on me and bam! I’ve got dark spots again.

Eucerin antipigmentation serum / tinted sun cream.

Im white but have slightly warm toned skin with pigmentation marks. Eucerin keeps it under control. I have a friend with Black - Caribbean skin who uses the same product for the same reason.

@AbitSceptical I realise, I did actually have the Eucerin for a while but couldn't really see any difference - it was a rollerball thing. Maybe I wasn't using it correctly.

@PaperBlinds The ones I have are a serum in a pump and a sunblock.Ive found I have to be consistent using to keep on top of discolouration, especially in summer. My skin also initially looked like freckles blurring.

if you go to a big boots they usually stock the whole range, and sometimes have 25% off.

oh I also really like the NARs concealer in a little pot. Takes a while to figure your shade so again easier to do in store the first time.

i’ll try to link the products if I can figure out how.

I used to use Eucerin and recommended it to my sister as it worked well and quickly but I think the formula changed as after a break from it, I stopped getting results when I restarted it.
i used the skinny stick with the sponge-like applicator.

Mandelic acid (the ordinary) worked pretty well but I did find it made my skin look paler overall which I wasn’t really going for. But if you aren’t particularly dark anyway you probably won’t see much difference on the rest of your skin. Traxenamic acid didn’t work for me.

Also just a really good sunscreen, la roche do good ones that sit well under makeup.

PaperBlinds · 16/05/2025 15:18

I have been using the La Roche Posay Anthelios Sunscreen fluid for a while - I like the tinted one better, but the consistency is a bit of a pain. My friend said she had a mousse or pump version which I need to look for. Currently using just the Boots Soltan Hydrating Sensitive Protect Facial Suncare with Niacinamide - but I am not very impressed, it doesn't seem to actually protect my skin from the sun.

I will have a look at the suggested products. No issue with make-up as I don't really wear it, but I am a bit wary of new products as skin sometimes reacts.

For SPF50, I use the Amber Solaire one called something like No Dark Spots, usually discounted in Superdrug and Boots. It protects my skin without a white cast although I still get some dark spots if I’ve been in the sun for too long and haven’t reapplied, hence the need for tranexamic acid!
