Dying clothes. Good idea?

I recently bought a white skirt. Bit of a hormonal panic buy. Quite like the shape, but white was a silly idea.

It would be far more useful in brown.

If I dye it, will it leak dye horribly every time I wash it? Will I get an even dye or will it look amaturish and blotchy?

I've never dyed anything before. Have you?

use dylon machine dye, it will dye evenly, then wash it with dark clothes. Costs about £5, I think. Dye works best with cotton.

OverMyDeadBody · 19/05/2008 19:37

the dylon stuff you put in the machine works fine, have used it for fancy dress stuff before and the resulkts are fine, no patches or streaks, and it doesn't leak subsequently.

BroccoliSpears · 19/05/2008 19:39

And it doesn't fill the washing machine with dye?

No, it's fine. But do check what the skirt is made of. Some fibres do not take dye well.

Be warned - if the stitching isn't cotton (it's often polyester), then the stitsches will stay white.

I love dyeing stuff - use it to refresh school stuff from the 2nd hand uniform sale, as well as occasionally changing colours of things. Dylon v good and simple IMO, although be careful as thread usually doesn't take the dye as it tends to be polyester, so if there is any visible stitching, that may not go the same colour as the fabric.

Oh sorry, took too long to post and ended up repeating stuff...

I have the opposite problem.

I have a blue cotton skirt and would like it white.

Can it be done?

TIA.

Lulumama · 20/05/2008 07:23

soak it in bleach?

i have used dylon machine dyes, the ones in the packet and the ones where you add salt..

they are brilliant, have used them to revive many a knackered pair of jeans and white stuff that has gone a bit beyond itself...

it does not wash into your clothes next time you use the machine, although my door seal is navy blue now !

brocc, check what fabric the skirt is, i dyed a cotton shirt once, but the stitching was nylon and it stayed white and looked odd.

Madlentileater · 20/05/2008 18:04

I think dylon also do a dye stripping product (for blue>white) but never used it
