Paranoid now about my (possibly!) frumpy Next trousers!

Bought these and have been wearing them loads with the nice weather. Generally with either a plain boxy T shirt or with a half-tucked pale blue shirt, linen or cotton, quite boyfriend style. Trainers or tan leather sandals depending on the state of my toenails!

Planned to wear them to a casual bbq this weekend and a couple of other weekend gatherings in the next few weeks, and having read the thread about the lovely poster in the Next queue feeling frumpy I’ve lost confidence! I wanted to avoid floral dress (nothing wrong with that look either!) because I’ve gained weight and don’t feel right in dresses. I’ve been more into this style of pleated trouser all winter and feel better in these than a dress or skirt.

but are they just going to make me look (more importantly feel) like style has passed me by?! I adore clothes, always have, but have seriously lost my way with peri weight gain and a lot of stress/worry at home. Just want to feel that I look vaguely breezy and ‘with it’ as my mum used to say, I’m not saying they’re trousers you’d wear to a front row in Paris but are they just hideous and unstylish?! And the dreaded ‘f’ word?

I am 48, am 5 foot 9 and an athletic (broad shoulders) untoned size 10/12, for context! I am working on the untoned thing but for various reasons it’s a struggle.

Any styling advice (or advice to bin the trews!) gratefully received!

I was on a thread about trousers - it was suggested that we no longer refer to elasticated waists but pull-on trousers! It's how the stores describe them anyway Grin

That makes me think of pull up nappies!

Octomingo · 13/05/2025 20:55

I wear trousers like these with a very slightly cropped top and white trainers. My current favourite outfit is a black version of these with a woolly-looking tank top. I'm your height and size.

I'm mid 40s, so never going to have a perfect stomach. But as it doesn't appear to prevent young people, it won't stop me.

12345mummy · 13/05/2025 21:12

I love these and I’m now considering ordering a pair myself! 😀

herbalteabag · 13/05/2025 21:39

I think the pinstripes are fine. I like the trousers, and I saw a young studenty type wearing some very similar ones the other day and thought they looked nice then too.

notnorman · 13/05/2025 22:00

They sound great for a Bbq

OopsieeDaisy · 13/05/2025 22:20

I like them! They’re nice, casual trousers and the way you style them sounds great. I’d also potentially wear them with a fitted white T-shirt tucked in, if that suits your style.

rockstarshoes · 13/05/2025 22:27

I really like them too & don’t think they are frumpy at all!

but surely every single type of trousers are 'pull on trousers'? how else do you get into them? have two people hold them up at waist height, you stand on a table and jump in?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/05/2025 20:37

Note I said 'pull-on' not pull-ups! Grin

Clownsy · 14/05/2025 09:01

I like them and you are tall so better again.

Gettingbysomehow · 14/05/2025 10:19

I'd love to be able to wear those but they absolutely would not suit my shape at all. If you can carry them off then fantastic.

curious79 · 14/05/2025 13:29

these are great - it's all about how you style them up/ accessorise

Fridgetapas · 14/05/2025 13:36

They’re nice, especially how you’ve described you’ve styled them it’s how lots of people are wearing them at the moment.

I think the slight frump element might be the colour navy? I tend to avoid it as unless styled really well it can be a bit corporate or frumpy. I have a few pairs of trousers similar to this but a light blue, a pink pin stripe and a white and grey pinstripe.

OneStepOneStumble · 14/05/2025 13:40

Came to say they're probably fine as they're everywhere as fashionable now, and leaving the thread feeling attacked for my round necked knee length dresses 🙃

Patricia1704 · 14/05/2025 13:44

With the boxy t shirt and the right sandals you’ll look great! Frumpy would depend on the sandals you’re pairing with. Not sure if any trainers would work well.

ShadesOfPemberley · 13/05/2025 14:01

Yeah it was the all elastic waistband that I was starting to doubt…!!!

Thank you everyone, AuntieDolly I’m sure your trousers are lovely 💪

if youre near 60 fine but below 40 no

SadieAdlerBountyHunter · 14/05/2025 14:33

I like them. Both colours look like nice basics in the pictures.

I wear elasticated waistbands too. I don't think they look frumpy at all, certainly not in of themselves.

MorningSunlight · 14/05/2025 14:45

I hope not, I've just ordered them!

Obimumkinobi · 14/05/2025 20:05

OP, you've got the perfect build/height to carry off this style!

Like a PP, I struggle with elastic waists, but only because they create a bit of a shelf on my already substantial arse. But it is hard to find linen trousers with a proper fly.

Every store has some shit clothes in it, they always have done. Don't let other's insecurities live rent free in your head - life's too short.

comoatoupeira · 14/05/2025 20:29

I like them and I’m really fussy.

so right about the knee length floral dress: that is frumpy. These are not.

Look great in my knee length denim dress. I'm owning it 😂

Ruthdpl · 15/05/2025 10:46

I’m in & out of my local Next often - not to buy their own brand stuff but to collect & try on online orders from all the different brands they now offer. It’s a godsend because if it’s not right, you can return it in store immediately, saving all the messing about with posting returns. Good business decision to open up their offering.

ARingtoit · 15/05/2025 11:51

I would wear them and I'm 32 and really into clothes! With your height they'll look especially good.

Theyre super cool! And sounds like a really nice outfit

DancingNotDrowning · 15/05/2025 13:55

I think elastic waists can be a little frumpy, but they’re definitely become more commonplace (cheap to mass produce) so maybe younger posters don’t associate them with the elasticated slacks which were exclusively worn by an older generation.

I’d much prefer something in the same fabric softly tailored with a pleat that adds a lovely slouch rather than it coming from a gathered waist.
