DD razor bumps/ingrown hair

DD is 12 and just started shaving, but she is getting a lot of razor bumps or ingrown hairs under her arms.

I’m not sure if this is due to her having very curly hair, as she uses the same products as me but I am fine.

After googling there seem to be lotions for afterwards, expensive single blade razors, exfoliates for either before or after etc but not many reviews.

Any advice for her?

Would using a hair removing cream be ok for her to use as the bumps etc wouldn't be an issue.

I haven’t tried any of those with her as she has quite sensitive skin and I remember being burned myself at her age! But I expect they have improved somewhat since then!!!

@eyespartypartyI used this recently and was burnt pretty badly. I followed the instructions to the letter.

Coffeeishot · 09/05/2025 13:15

I'd take her if she isn't too shy to get her underarms waxed me and my adult Dds have always used Gillette disposable Venus razors without issues,

Does she put deodorant on afterwards?

Rpolo · 09/05/2025 13:30

Tell her to mix some tea tree oil with non fragranced moisturiser and put on after she shaves. Also make sure she’s regularly changing her razor and it’s clean

Yes but not immediately.
I don’t think she’s ready for waxing as the issue is being shaved for PE 3 times a week (they wear vest style tshirts) so she wouldn’t want to let them grow in between.

Could she try and electric razor, they don't give quite such a close shave so therefore less likely to get the ingrown hairs. She might need to do it more often but it's not that much of a faff to whiz an electric razor underarm.

lostinchaos · 09/05/2025 14:24

would she let you shave them for her? It might be her technique is not quite right and so it would give her skin a chance to recover.

hairyspiderleg · 09/05/2025 14:29

Is she shaving in the shower?
If so then a splash of cold water in her pits before shaving will help close the pores.
Detol bar soap to clean under arms instead of shower gel before whatever product she is using to help shave.
Aloe Vera after.
2nd the electric razor, an elipadator would hurt like hell and maybe have the same issues but wouldn't be needed as often.

3 times a week is a lot she's maybe over shaving.

Thank you for the tip, I’ll buy some tea-tree oil.

I am going to get her to leave over the weekend and then do them myself to see if it’s user-error with the razor, good idea! At least we’ll know then whether she needs new products.

Anyone tried things like tend-skin I see advertised? Are you meant to use it as prevention or straight after?

Will buy some dettol and aloe Vera too, thank you.

I got her an electric one but she said it wasn’t close enough, I think at her age her pits are small and she can’t get the angle…

Ensure the blade is very sharp, so the newer the better. Older blades can be saved for legs which are far more robust. And she might like to try shaving with hair conditioner as opposed to a shaving cream or shower gel.

Ddakji · 09/05/2025 17:15

I have curly hair and while I get in growing hairs on my legs, I never have on my armpits. I shave every other day using a Venus razor and bog standard soap.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 09/05/2025 17:42

I used to get this really badly on my legs then I read somewhere about using baby oil instead of shaving foam/soap to shave. It has worked completely.

I'd let the bumps go down for a bit using hair removal cream then try baby oil in a week or so

eyespartyparty · 10/05/2025 11:42

Maybe the curly hair isn’t a thing then! Think I’ve got some baby oil somewhere…might also get her a new razor and start again.
