Blonde on blonde?

Any hairdressers out there that can offer some advice?
I have light brown hair with flecks of grey through it. Not enough grey to look stylish. Just enough to look miserable. So I have it highlighted evert 3 months.lots of different shades of blonde put through it. All good.
However, it's getting really expensive and I was thinking of using a home dye on it. Would it be a disaster?
If I used a dark blonde permanent dye on it, would it go green or fall out? Should I just do the roots or would I be OK putting it all over?
All advice gratefully received.

I'm not a hairdresser but used to dye my own hair at home a lot. I would really advise against this! Most blonde box dyes don't have enough power to lighten and tone your hair in one, it'll likely go orange. And in terms of damage, you're putting effectively a high-lift colour over the parts of your hair that have already been lightened when they were highlighted. You're likely to fry all those bits that are already blonde.

If you have a dye that is very similar in colour to your natural colour, that might work, but you'd need to 'fill' the blonde highlights with a reddish colour to avoid the light brown dye turning your blonde bits greenish. It's all a bit more complex than I would want to attempt at home I'm afraid!

Hairdresser here !
I would not do what your thinking I would try and transition u into a lived in blonde or grey blending but u need someone who is good at these ! Maybe when u go for next appointment mention its too frequent and too expensive a good stylist will help u out ! But those to techniques I mentioned are more low maintenance x

Thank you both. I had a feeling it wouldn't be a good idea. I'll have a chat with my hairdresser.

Another question: could I plonk a light brown permanent dye all over? Disaster?

What about putting a colour gloss over the top?

Try a light ash blond semi permanent.

Must be ash because other wit might go orange, and light blonde because ash always tends to go darker.

Putting a brown box dye over blonde runs a risk of coming out very ashy or even slightly green tinted. Certainly very flat.

It's because there is a lack of red in bleached hair. Professional colourists 'fill' the hair (ie: put some red back in it) before adding brown.

No it will need filling with a gold orange otherwise it will just look a bit green and more than likely wash out quickly x

I'd go for something semi permanent maybe? A gloss as someone suggested^^

That said, I have used box dyes on my mousey hair and have been quite lucky that they haven't come out too bad tbh. I don't use them often though and I do try to choose one as close as possible to my natural hair colour (but a bit brighter)

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to have to get it sorted professionally.
