Recommendations for Better Quality Clothing

I really want to focus more on quality over quantity of clothes. It’s hard to know what is better quality vs just more expensive because of the brand name. Where have you shopped where you’ve noticed the difference in quality. Thinking well cut and washes well. Basics but also some nice dresses as I tend to live in them!

I always feel that the quality of material and cut is good with Hobbs. So I buy them second hand.

This is my only suggestion as I would like the same answer but feel guilty stalking your thread without adding anything. 😇

I’m interested in the same.

While not exactly ‘fashion forward’ I think Lands End is usually good quality fabric and manufacture and worth a look for basics (I particularly recommend their swimming costumes).

I have been finding that I have search on natural fibres - cotton, linen, merino.
Still find Jaeger ok. But some brands like Phase Eight and And Other Stories material quality has go down and the price is still up there- most annoying when you buy something for £80 that bobbles in 5 minutes

Uniqlo are brilliant quality for basics
Even they’re underwear is far superior to anything I’ve ever bought
i have some beautiful collarless linen shirts from Muji and their T shirts are also the best I’ve bought.

CrotchetyQuaver · 07/05/2025 12:12

White company, expensive but lovely. Like Hobbs a good brand to buy off vinted.
and I think M&S are doing well at the moment too

Radra · 07/05/2025 12:14

I really like Whistles at the moment

Floisme · 07/05/2025 12:22

The only one I can think of that's anywhere near my league price wise and where I've found consistently good quality is Community Clothing - utilitarian vibe, not to everyone's taste but worth a look.

And I'm always on the look out for second hand Margaret Howell (also not to everyone's taste).

I've found decent enough stuff in plenty of other places - Uniqlo, Cos, M&S and even (though not so much recently) H&M, but never consistently, and I've also had some stinkers from all of these.

MidnightMeltdown · 07/05/2025 13:09

I don’t think that anywhere is consistently good quality. All shops do good and poor quality. You need to look at the individual items unfortunately.

That’s frustrating because ideally I’d just like to order some bits and not have to figure out what’s good and what’s not!

I have some lovely bits from Uniqlo but find it hit and miss for dresses. Hobbs is something I look for on Vinted, but mostly workwear

I buy a lot of my clothes from Me and Em now and find the quality very good (although pricey).

NorthernSpirit · 07/05/2025 14:58

Uniqlo for basics. John Lewis ‘Everyday’ range has some great pieces in at the moment.

Everywhere else that claims to be premium (Whistles, Reiss, Jigsaw etc) I have to pick my way through as polyester is rife.

Tooearlytothink · 07/05/2025 15:03

Great question, will be looking into some of the answers here as I’ve been struggling with this too. A brand I’ve found recently & loved the quality of was Beaufort & Blake.

Duckies · 07/05/2025 15:06

I tend to look for fabric weight (min 175gsm) and 100% cotton etc

BUT I see so many online reviews where things are praised for being 'lovely and lightweight' or criticised for being 'too thick and stiff' so I may not be representative!

Yes, Jigsaw used to be my ‘go to’ for good quality clothing. However, in recent years I’ve noticed that they have replaced their silk with ‘satin’ (aka shiny polyester) and quality has generally dropped. It’s still better than Whistles on quality though, which imo has been dire for a while.

I haven’t been too impressed with things that I’ve bought from the White Company. They look nice when new, but tend not to wash and wear well in my experience. Most recent purchase was a pair of pyjamas, and when they were washed, the elastic all twisted up in the waist band. Not impressed. Even my cheap pyjamas don’t do that. Maybe I’ve been unlucky, but most items I’ve bought from them have developed flaws pretty quickly.

MulberryPeony · 07/05/2025 15:22

Toast and Kemi Telford are on my list. I’d say Baukjen as well but I haven’t used them for a few years now.

andtheworldrollson · 07/05/2025 15:28

White company stuff hasn’t been anywhere near as long lasting as Seasalt

hennybeans · 07/05/2025 16:34

I bought dd a long sleeve silk top last week from the vintage rail at Oxfam from LK Bennett. It was £25 which is a lot for a charity shop, but you certainly won’t find a silk top sold new on the high street for anything close to that. They also had a whole rail of older wool coats.

I always buy in the sale/E Bay/Vestaire from Margaret Howell, &Daughter, The Knotty Ones, Navy and Grey and John Smedley.

Izzy Lane I've bought from them for years and the quality is amazing. Wool is from rescued sheep and the scarf I just ordered is knitted in Nottinghamshire, their socks are made in Bradford.

Muji is generally good quality as is COS but it isn't as good as it was.
