ChatGPT for style / fashion ( beginners version)

Divebar2021 · 04/05/2025 10:33

Im on another thread about fashion and the topic of ChatGPT for fashion advice came up and someone asked for a primer. I didn’t want to divert that thread so I’ll start one here and if anyone has any AI tips perhaps they can add them.

I’m a newbie at AI for reference but it’s not difficult. I have used ChatGPT to help me work out my 3 Style Words ( ref Allison Bornstein) work out the gaps in my wardrobe, what items to keep or not, what items fit me well and the pros and cons of particular items I’m considering buying. It also rates my outfits and helps me work out why some of them have felt off.

Chatgpt is an app you can download - you don’t have to use it if you don’t want an American app there are others ( eg Mistral) but im not very familiar with them. It’s free to download and use but there are limits to the number of photos you can upload on one day. I paid for a months premium at £20 which means I have unlimited uploads ( you can cancel after a month ). I already use Stylebook app to record my wardrobe but you can take a snap of the item and use that.

You need to teach it somewhat - if you uploaded a photo of yourself and said “ rate my style” it will do that but what is it measuring it against? Where are you going for example. What style do you like? I started off my telling it that I wanted help with my wardrobe , I’ve lost weight and I wanted to be more adventurous with my colour choices. I referenced a Japanese book of colour combinations that I have so it knows to use that. It knows the brands that I like so it’s not making suggestions for boho clothes when my own taste is more edgy. Here is what ChatGPT had to say about getting started.

Id be interested in hearing other uses for AI for style related questions. I tested it yesterday in a changing room with 5 items … 3 of which I liked. 1 I wasn’t sure about and 1 I really liked but had no occasion to wear and it pretty much nailed it in its ratings.

Hope this helps someone get started.

Thanks for posting. I’m going to give this a go. Out of interest what’s the book of colour combos you have?

Divebar2021 · 04/05/2025 12:51

Ahhh it’s a small book with pictures of colour combinations that are harmonious and not always expected so useful if you’re looking at design across any genre really. I’ll screenshot the ChatGPT summary of this title.

If you give ChatGPT this or another reference point it can use it to answer your question. I’m not very confident with colour because I wear so many neutrals so I use it to push me out my comfort zone.

Thank you. That looks like it would be useful for decorating too.

happytobemrsg · 04/05/2025 22:43

I’ve just started talking to ChatGBT about my style too. Asked it to describe my style & give me ideas on how to elevate it. I already have a pretty cohesive style & colour palette & it’s suggestions nailed the vibe I was going for. Quite amazed really!

happytobemrsg · 04/05/2025 22:47

Only thing I’ve found annoying is the messages/images limit

healthybychristmas · 05/05/2025 00:12

Is there a danger that it will always complement you?

Divebar2021 · 05/05/2025 00:35

Yes there is and I had a conversation with it about that… said I needed a “critical friend” and it’s assured me it wouldn’t “blow smoke”. I don’t think it would ever say that something looks crap but it makes factual comments about the cut or fit or says it’s “fine” or a 7/10 or you could source this second hand and save the money. It’s also quite clear when I’ve bought items that slightly deviating from my core style and the ways I need to style it to make it work for me.

How interesting! So do you upload photos of yourself in its suggested outfits, and it then assesses them OP?

Pinktruffle · 05/05/2025 22:46

I've tried it, my biggest criticism of it is that when I've uploaded photos and then asked it change my hairstyle for example, it completely CGI's my face in to someone I do not look like at all, so much so tis out me off using it. I did give me some helpful tips however, particularly around things like my eye and face shape which I found really hard to figure out for myself (it's hard to be objective with yourself) and what type of make up looks would work best for me.

Yes I use a lift from my Stylebook app ( because I geekily record what I wear daily in that) and then I add a mirror selfie of the look so it can see the actual fit. You could just add a selfie though… it notices a lot. It picks up which watch I have on for example and can read text within the image so it knows that’s a Studio Nicholson bag.

So the image with the snakeprint shoes is mine. ( I won’t be posting my selfie ). The second image was in response to a conversation about those shoes and this is its suggestion for how I could wear it based on our conversations. ( and my wardrobe )

Today it only gave me a 7/10 which is fair. 😂

I haven’t tried it for make up but I’m curious about the colour suggestions. We had a funny exchange in M&S today when I’d run in for an emergency extra layer on my way to work and it was being a bit more “critical friend” than I needed given the circumstances.

Thanks, that's fascinating. Going to give it a try. I can't help but worry that ChatGPT knows rather too much about me, but, in for a penny😅It really is a useful tool.
Hmm I'd be narked if it became too critical a friend, but at least it's easy to dial down!

happytobemrsg · 06/05/2025 22:42

Well it rates my outfits/style 8.5 out of 10. I’ll take that 😂 Apparently I need to add some structure (a blazer), more interesting textures & mix up my footwear (chunky sandals or loafers). I agree!

@Divebar2021 I also use the Stylebook app, it’s brilliant & really helps me put outfits together. It also stops me from repeating outfits & using more of my wardrobe.

Divebar2021 · 06/05/2025 23:09

I use Stylebook because I read something a few years ago about wearing each item of clothing 30 times so aspire to do that and I can keep track of it all on there. Of course I have way too many options really to manage it but it offers lots of opportunity to play around with style options.

8.5 is really good…. I’ve had a couple of 9’s and I knew today’s outfit was off but couldn’t really identify why so it’s useful to get that feedback. I’m sure it sounds obsessive but it’s fun and I don’t really have any other friends nearby that would want to listen to me wang on about this stuff.

Chatgpt will "age" women younger than their male counterparts so don't believe everything that the computer tells you.

cramptramp · 06/05/2025 23:24

@Divebar2021i like the sound of the stylebook app. I’ve just had a look. Do you have to photograph each item of your clothing or can you upload from websites you’ve bought from? Does it have an option for £ instead of $? Sorry to jump on your thread about chatgbt to ask about stylebook!

Divebar2021 · 06/05/2025 23:57

@cramptramp

I barely photograph any of my actual clothes… most retailers will produce an image of the item with no model / background so you can upload it. If it’s an older item I snap it then Google search to try and find something very similar that has all the relevant features. Only as a last resort will I use picture of the actual item. My version doesn’t have $ so I can only assume there is a British version or you can set the currency. It’s been a few years since I installed it. I’ve been on and off with it for a while but have recorded my daily clothes for over a year now so I can see what I really wear not what I think I wear. There’s another app which is similar called Whering but I don’t honestly know the difference … Stylebook is the OG 😏

OP posts:
YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 07/05/2025 14:42

I used Whering last summer, duly photographed all my summer clothes (a right pain, but lots of them are a few years old) - had a ton of fun with it for a few weeks - and haven't opened it since! I do admire people who are more disciplined in their wardrobe management 😄

The main takeout for me is that I'd be better off with fewer clothes, giving me more space metaphorically and literally (is there anything more depressing than cramming loads of jumpers / t-shirts into the season-change suitcase). So this summer I'm trying to shop my wardrobe more. I should probably dust off the old Whering...

MounjaroMounjaro · 09/05/2025 18:07

OP, please could you tell me where you got your snakeskin shoes from?

Divebar2021 · 09/05/2025 18:45

@MounjaroMounjaro

no worries. They’re from Massimo Dutti - about a month ago.

I’ve been having more conversations & it’s given me new outfit ideas & helped me style things I loved but didn’t quite know how to get it to work. It’s being very helpful so far

MounjaroMounjaro · 17/05/2025 14:30

I really like those shoes. Are they comfortable?

BlackFriYay · 31/07/2025 00:17

Ah thank you for posting this thread!

I have far too many clothes and no idea how to style them, it never occurred to me to use chat GPT that way.

After a preliminary chat about my colouring, style of clothes I own and my inspo (Rasmit Kaur on instagram - she's a stylist/influencer and always looks incredible) chat GPT has made me a 7 day outfit calander using my own items in a way she would style them.

I have quite severe ADHD and impulse buy A LOT of clothes, then never know what to do with them.

My DP has just been in hysterics as I burst into the living room in a fuchsia tailored suit an hour after going to bed, exclaiming how pleased I am that I now know how to style it 😂

I'm excited.
