Clothes for a 20yo

Okiedokie123 · 29/04/2025 21:24

ie my 20 yo dd!
She needs new clothes but equally........ whenever we have a look in our (not great) local shops or have a look online we end up giving up because I just see things I like...... and she is totally unenthusiastic about anything that I suggest. If I dont suggest...... she shows no interest at all really.
But then when she needs xyz item of clothing its suddenly all my fault that she hasnt got what she needs.
She mostly wears jeans and plain tshirts atm. With a hoodie/sweatshirt/jumper if its cooler.

Where can we have a look for some new stuff she might like? Maybe...... a step away from the jeans and t shirts she currently sticks too!
Thanks!

Can you take her to a big shopping centre and give her £x and just leave her to it?

AFrolicOfMyOwn · 29/04/2025 21:51

Did you misread the OP’s daughter as being 12 rather than 20, @MidnightPatrol? 😄

@Okiedokie123 - unless she has some specific difficulty that makes independent shopping impossible for her - I’d suggest you step away carefully. Learning to dress appropriately is part of becoming an adult - and she has already had two decades of learning how to do this from you and the rest of the world. If there’s no particular need for her to change her wardrobe, then it doesn’t matter. If the occasions of work, study, socialising, travel demand a wardrobe upgrade, she will learn from having to make the effort.

Your daughter isn’t a child - it’s her own responsibility to make sure she’s properly clothed. Ignore any nonsense about it being your fault if she doesn’t have the right clothes. (Though of course encourage and advise if she asks you to. But don’t take on the responsibility.)

Okiedokie123 · 29/04/2025 21:51

A nice idea in theory but I know that she'd end up back at home with all the money.

Where do 20yo women buy clothes? Im honestly clueless.

@AFrolicOfMyOwn no I read it correctly - that’s why I’m suggesting she’s just left to do it on her own, and not with her mothers input!

My daughters are 21 and 18 and they buy most of their clothes online for going out. And high street for everyday wear. They love a charity shop rummage too. The youngest is quite changeable. From Jeans. To Leggings. To Flowery skirts. She likes urban outfitters. They both like h and m and a mooch in primark. The elder lives mainly in leggings. She did have a lovely long denim skirt on last weekend from Tesco though.

Mumofyellows · 29/04/2025 22:02

I have. 21 yr old DD she shops at...
ASOS
H&M
Zara
Primark
Vinted
Goose and Gander
Mars the Label
Adenola
PLT

I also thought........ actually thats totally a sensible idea. But Ive just gone and suggested it to her and she said what I thought she would "But which shops would I go in? Where would I look?" Because neither of us know what shops 20yo are keen on.

Im totally happy not to be involved in her clothes dilemma and actually I rarely am. Which is why shes in this predicament. So I try and help......... and then we both get stuck!

She has actually got SEN so yes...... there are reasons why she does need more help than a 20yo usually would.

Surely it depends on what she likes wearing? Also, is she at uni? Or a job? Her budget? There are so many factors.

Does she not have any friends who are into fashion?

mewkins · 29/04/2025 22:12

How about setting aside an evening to make a list of what she needs and and then going through some websites and placing some orders? Asos, H and M (which also has Monki and Weekday on its site) as a starting place. She can then try things on with things she already owns and work out if she wants to keep them.

HugelyExpensiveCrystalDuck · 29/04/2025 22:37

My dd2 loves Disturbia.

I’ve got two DD’s and they dress and shop really differently but both avoid Next and M&S.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 29/04/2025 22:59

Uniqlo do brilliant quality basics

Rollergirl11 · 29/04/2025 23:12

19tr old DD shops at

High street shops: Urban outfitters, Zara, H&M, Bershka, Pull & Bear, Subdued, Stradivarius

Online: Motel Rocks, ASOS, White Fox, Outcast, Shein, Dfyne, Gymshark

There’s nothing wrong with wearing jeans btw. Most girls will wear wide legged jeans with cropped tops for going out. But probs good to have some joggers too. And now we’re coming in to warmer months maybe some mini skirts and denim shorts and maybe a floaty long skirt?

Coffeeforayear · 30/04/2025 00:08

20 year olds are allowed to buy clothes from many places.
Anywhere from Next to Urban Outfitters , cider, Zara, Mango, Monki, etc. Top Shop is still available online.

They can trawl charity shops also if they so wish.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 30/04/2025 00:09

My lot (20s male and female) all shop at uniqlo for basics and then accessorise with Vinted finds, niche brand japanese denim and ‘vintage’ (to them!) 80s/90s stuff or H&M etc.

blizymitzy · 30/04/2025 11:36

my 19 year old ( nearly 20) shops at
most of the ones mentioned plus

brandy melville
abercrombie and fitch
hollister
subdued
