Is it time to go “simple” skincare?

I’m 60+. I’ve always looked after my skin. I’ve used Nivea, Claris when it was first widely available in the late 70’s and all sorts in between, over the years. I never got on well with Clinique; it always brought me out in a rash.

I’ve been using StriVectin for a few months now but am becoming very sensitive to something in the formulation. The only thing that feels truly calming and plumping to my skin, is Aveeno Cream. Not the specific face products, the huge colloidal oats, 500ml one which I use, all over.

I’m wondering whether to sack the anti ageing anti-sagging, firming, brightening, lifting, smoothing etc creams and just use the good old Aveeno Cream. Will my face “collapse” overnight? Anyone else of a certain age, who’s bought into the “look your best as long as possible” promise just said “enough!!”, without ageing like a vampire exposed to the sun?

I don’t think your face will collapse overnight. What is the scientific evidence for all these so called creams for anti-aging, firming, lifting etc ?
I suspect there’s a fair degree of a marketing hype.
I’m early 60s and I use own brand cheap face creams and I look younger than all my same age friends.
I don’t smoke or drink alcohol, don’t spend too much time in the sun and I use facial sunscreen.

I'm beginning to think the same, I'm using up all my serums and then I will just use a retinol if I can still get it in Spain a moisturiser and spf , its all in the marketing bloggers like trinny now selling expensive eye and neck creams, before when she just did fashion she used to say we didn't need eye and neck cream just use what you use on your face. Now she's selling them .I was watching dermatologist explaining you really only need the 3 things I mentioned.

I can’t use retinol. Have tried and usually end up with hurt, red, stinging skin. I don’t sunbathe. Never have. As a kid I went from burnt to peeling.

I think I’ll finish what I have and then have a sabbatical 😊. Use my Aveeno which I love, SPF 50 on top in the day, every day and see what happens.

I have eczema so have always just used aveeno on my whole body including face. Everyone comments on my lack of wrinkles and smooth skin, I look a lot younger than I am. Let's just say the grey hairs don't match the youthful face lol.
I would ditch the products and go for aveeno! As long as you're putting moisture into your skin it should stay "plump" x

Strivecnin is strong stuff, I'm not surprised you reacted badly.
Interesting about Clinique, it irritated my skin when I tried using it. Estee Lauder also gave me a bad irritation and my skin is usually quite tolerant.
I think your plan sounds good. Use the cream you enjoy, be religious about using a good SPF and I'd suggest adding a really good peptides serum as well. The best you can afford. I personally like the No7 Laboratories and I am very impressed with Medik8 Advanced Peptides but there are others available.

Sometimes, I think the more we do the worse it is. My nan had amazing skin. Oil of Ulay. Nothing else. Non smoker. No time or inclination for a tan; totally alien concept!

Thanks for the replies.

I often have the same thoughts. There are just so many products/options. Does a specific neck cream do more than a general facial moisturiser....I'm really not convinced. Have a friend similar age to me, late fifties, who has only ever used Astral face cream and has great skin.

mynameiscalypso · 26/04/2025 20:40

I’ve tried many expensive moisturisers and creams and I always come back to the aveeno in the tube with the blue lid. Never found anything better for my face.

soccermum10 · 26/04/2025 20:53

I'm 41, and the only cream I put on my face is suncream. That's it, under my makeup. None of this anti-aging, retinol, etc. At night....nothing. I let it breathe. My friends are all getting botox for fine lines, etc. I'm glad I don't need to go there, but they drink, vape, and sunbathe. I don't 🙂 I've been told I look younger than what I am, and that could be my genes because my mum looks easily 10 years younger than her age. Again, she doesn't drink, smoke/vape, or sunbathe either. I do believe your lifestyle and genes play an important part. These creams claim to provide miracles but I'm yet to see the facts. Can't beat suncream 🙂👍

GoingOffScript · 26/04/2025 22:30

@soccermum10 It’s great to have those genes! I’ve never smoked. Haven’t sunbathed as an adult. Drink the water, exercise but… I do like a red wine!

I’ve just come up to bed with a good book and gave Aveeno’d 😊. No stinging, no watering eyes. I’ve persevered with various creams (because I’ve shelled out for them) yet NONE at all, feel this soothing.
