Solid shampoo recommendations

I'm trying to use less plastic and have tried a couple shampoo blocks but there are many more on the market now and I'd love to hear about your favourites.

I have long thick wavy hair. I sometimes wonder if I have dry scalp as can be itchy and almost like dandruff - but not flaky.

I wash it probably every other day. Don't brush it or use heat or products regularly - sometimes a spray in coconut conditioner.

So, which ones do you think are good and reasonably priced?

There is a lot I would do for the environment before this!

Phunkychicken · 26/04/2025 09:10

I am using up Lush ones that are pretty good but won't buy anything else from them so also looking.

I found the Garnier and Faith in Nature bars drying, I have v hard water so the Friendly one (plus others which are soap based) are a total no go. The KinKind ones are meant to be good, and I'm tempted to spend some Liberty's credit on the Davines one.

The best I've found is a vegetable milk ( whatever that is) one from France

The only one I'd repurchase is the Éthique Curliosity or Bar None (the fragrance-free one). Having said that, I'm currently using neither, but I am using the Curliosity conditioner bar.

@Alongtoe makes a fair point though - might be best to find a shampoo you love that comes in refill packs instead!

I've stopped using shower gel and use mild soaps instead - I feel like that's an easier win. I like Oliva (health food shops) and goat milk soaps.

I didn't know Davines did a shampoo bar! I like their curl shampoo and conditioner.

What's the French one, please?

Phunkychicken · 26/04/2025 09:14

Just added link to the French one

Bootsineedboots · 26/04/2025 09:16

I use one from Gruum, a nourishing one. I’ve also tried the matching conditioner which I didn’t like.

Thank you @Phunkychicken - I might pick up that up next time I'm in France, DOP is always well priced.

Use KinKind - woman owned British brand which produce very decent shampoo bars

Re: itchy, flaky scalp. It might be your water. I live in a very hard water area and get a seriously itchy scalp from the build of limescale. As well as doing the occasional vinegar rinse after shampooing (1 part vinegar, 5 parts water, in a spray bottle) and I've found that charcoal shampoo really seems to keep my hair soft and helps lessen the build up of hard water minerals that turn my hair dull, dry and brassy.

Most of the ones I've used are liquid but Gruüm do a good one in a solid bar, it's called Copper Control. I'm using it now and like it a lot.

RockaLock · 26/04/2025 15:30

The Davines bar is OK. It’s the sort that goes really mushy, though, even if you keep it in a tin.

I’ve used gruum before and really liked them - I was actually going to buy some more just now, as they have a great promotion on at the moment.

I’ve never found a conditioner bar that I’ve got on with, though.

TwentyKittens · 26/04/2025 15:32

I love Wild Ona, a small UK business based in Glasgow.

They're the only brand I've tried where my hair doesn't end up feeling really heavy with residue.

CucumberCool · 26/04/2025 21:11

Ah amazing recommendations!
@RockaLock totally agree about conditioner bar, makes my hair look and feel greasy immediately.
@ScrambledSmegs yes very hard water in Bristol, nightmare on my kettle too. Will make up a vinegar rinse and look into a charcoal shampoo too!

Love a women owned small businesses, will give them a go and report back!
Thanks all

The teetree kitsch bar is ok for cleansing.

I find the kinkind rice protein shampoo ok but I had a horrible reaction to their pink one and I find all of the conditioner bars I've used completely useless.

ScrambledSmegs · 26/04/2025 21:30

Re: vinegar rinse - there’s some detailed info on this page of Holland & Barrett. They seem a bit obsessed with apple cider vinegar but I do use it in my rinse as it has a milder smell and is quite gentle on the scalp. Good luck!

I really rate this company. In fact you’ve reminded me to reorder!

https://www.howaboutnope.com/

I switched to using nope and after 25+ years of daily hair washing I now wash it every 2 or even 3 days - it’s a gamechanger! I have very fine hair though so it might not suit everyone (didn’t work so well on my 8 year old
daughter’s hair which is much thicker than mine, and seemed to be dried out too much by the bar - which I guess is why I can go longer between washes). So for me it’s more of a case that the shampoo bar is better for my hair than liquid shampoo (and the bonus is that it’s an eco friendly option).
