Such a dull topic, but I have started too swim regularly and my hair is getting destroyed by the chlorine, I tried the Triswim shampoo which didn't do much and smelt foul, I'm currently using Ultra Swim which is ok but is there anything better out there that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

Do you wear a swim hat? and what is you hair type?

I soak hair in clean water and put in swim hat
after rinse before shampoo and shampoo and condition and rinse like mad!
I use faith in nature lavender and geranium shampoo and conditioner and kerastase elixir oil

I use aveda sun and swim shampoo but I always wear a swim hat. I wet my hair and apply a decent coating of conditioner too (any type for under the hat).
I immediately wash my hair after swimming obvs and condition again with a good quality conditioner.

Philip Kingsley Swimcap hair mask finger combed through damp hair and then put my swim hat on before swimming.

Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two for the first shampoo after swimming, then a moisture boosting shampoo and conditioner to follow.

ECO Warrior shampoo bar for dry hair (either orange and ginger or coconut and argan oil) faith in nature coconut and shea butter conditioner bar or ice just discovered friendly tee tree and lavender conditioner and that's lovely too.

Also sometimes use https://amzn.eu/d/2GXz5kj if my hair is struggling a bit

No I don't wear a hat as I only do a sedate breaststroke and can't put my face in water soo would feel a bit of a wally wearing a hat for some reason as the hat wearers seem to be proper speedy fast swimmers.

My hair is a short bob and I have very fine hair which is somewhat sparse thanks to the menopause so not long enough to put up either, I do soak my hair with clean water before getting tin the pool.

When I belonged to a health club I wore a hat and I wasn't a fast swimmer. It really did help.

Loads of women wear a hat during sedate swims at my pool. People won’t think you’re a wally. Clearly your hair is getting somewhat wet, otherwise you wouldn’t be having the question about how to protect it.

My own hat is a hideous shiny blue thing but it does help.

Lurkingshark · 25/04/2025 06:38

Definitely a hat and a light conditioner. I’ve tried many and find most of them much of a muchness. I never wet my hair but maybe I’ll try that.
I currently have a random brand of swim shampoo from tkmaxx. I like Swimcap but £££.
Also worth trying kids swim shampoos- more easily available and lots of own brands available.

I see swimmers of all speeds wearing the hats and if you are ever NOT going to raise eyebrows for wearing a swimming cap, it is in a swimming pool. 🤣 I understand the reluctance to wear one because I felt like that the first few wears, but it truly doesn’t take long to get used to. If anything you get judged less for wearing one as you are considerate to other swimmers. Everyone should wear one, unless completely bald.

As for your hair which is of course your question - drenching the hair and then putting hat on made a huge difference on my fine, brittle hair. I then rinse very well after.
I use Herbal shampoo and conditioner. Look after your skin too - chlorine is nasty long term. :) Have fun!

You need to wear a hat, saturate with water first, then silicon hat on. Condition with Philip Kingsley Elasticiser after washing. Don't wear product on it in the pool though, it leaves a residue and tastes foul for those that do stick their heads in. It's my pet peeve, those that don't shower or remove make up before swimming, I hate tasting perfume etc it is gross.
