Office wear - smarter than jeans

Most women seem to wear jeans and a shirt or blouse so this is what I've been wearing. I have to attend a meeting in a few weeks (in a few months it will be my job to take the minutes, so any tips on that score welcome too!) and asked what the dress code is.

Smarter than black jeans and a blouse but not necessary to wear a suit. I asked about suit trousers and a shirt and was told it doesn't need to be that smart. No skirts or dresses allowed.

Smart shoes rather than trainers (can do that, have black boots)

Bit bemused though as to what is smarter than jeans and blouse but not as smart as a suit. Any suggestions? (Preferably with bootcut trousers to hide my clown sized feet!)

No skirts or dresses allowed.

Unless there's a valid safety reason your employer can't dictate that.

So far as no suit trousers
(a) how could they tell? Many tailored women's trousers can be bought with a jacket as an option but without the jacket, they're just trousers and
(b) why shouldn't you wear a trouser suit if you wanted to?

Marks and Spencer do nice flat fronted chinos that would be smart, but more casual than suit trousers.

I wear saint and sofia black, navy or grey boot cut trousers trousers with a nice top. They have an elasticated waist and are stretchy but smart too. So comfortable yet smart.

I'm a convert to grey trousers. They really suit me.

Wide leg trousers. I got mine in Next and River Island but they're everywhere.

I would guess as no skirts or dresses, possibly a building site or warehouse.

If it were a building site, footwear would be workboots - if a warehouse, same, if lots of heavy goods or trainers if not.
Smart shoes would be the least appropriate in both locations.

No skirts or dresses allowed?! What kind of company is this? Sounds like sexism to me. Would they tell men that no trousers were allowed?

CCLCECSC · 25/04/2025 12:42

Chinos

Halara have some great trousers that seem very popular. Wide legged, stretchy and comfy

FlatWhiteOrLatte · 25/04/2025 12:49

Wide leg trousers as others have said. I wear these type of trousers with a shirt/blouse or knitwear for smart but comfy.

I get office clothes inspiration from Trinny. I follow a similar style to hers for the office, but do wear white trainers!

Ok, wide leg trousers make me look like an elephant 😂they're massive and not very flattering!

I finally have a job after years of searching, I'm not about to question the dress code in my first few months! If the others say long trousers plus blouse/shirt, that's what I'm going to wear. I don't often wear dresses or skirts anyway.

I’m in navy or burgundy chinos and a blouse but must admit the slim fit doesn’t feel very current. I’d like some wide leg pinstripe trousers.
