Flat shoes for a formal event

Just that really. Looking for inspiration for a smart flat shoe to wear with a smart/flowy black maxi evening dress. Will be wearing silver jewellery and soft silver leather clutch.

I always think ankle boots look good for this sort of occasion.

A leather or suede Chelsea Boot would look great - and would be very comfortable.

Budget?

Jimmy Choo does some lovely flats for dressier occasions. There are often bargains to be had on Vinted if you get lucky with timing and sizing. Worth a look.

Have a look at Gabor Jackie loafers in silver. They are lovely soft leather and very comfortable.

Flat silver shoes are everywhere - ballet, mary jane, slingbacks.

spartanrunnergirl · 21/04/2025 12:43

Pointed toe ballet flat is always good in gold or silver depending on tone of jewellery etc.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 21/04/2025 12:43

Pretty Ballerina has heaps of dressy flats. Dune is good too and cheaper.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 21/04/2025 12:46

I quite like these but pointed flats are definitely the way to go. The outfit sounds elegant, loafers and ankle boots generally aren't.

this is another 'are the men worrying about this' moment

why are we tolerating a situation where women exclusively are expected to endure uncomfortable and inefficient footwear in order to meet a standard of dress that only applies to women

men dress smartly for smart occassions and have smart shoes to go with their smart clothes- can they comfortably walk/stand in those smart shoes???

FlorenceLyons · 21/04/2025 12:55

I have these, which look great and are incredibly soft and comfortable. Looks like they’re only available in a 36, but sharing in case that works for you!

Au contraire. In this case, the OP doesn't want to be uncomfortable so I rather think you've missed the point.

But there's also the small matter of human nature whereby people like to look nice. It's not a new thing.

Definitely not loafers or ankle boots- they'll just look as if OP couldn't find anything else.

There really isn't a problem here. I mentioned Pretty Ballerina and Dune because I've got shoes from them but just about everyone who sells shoes from Tu to Manolo Blahnik sells dressy, flats. Your suggestion is fine too.

You're a bit behind the times. Dressy flats, at all price points, have been a thing for ages.

northwestgirl · 21/04/2025 20:00

yes I know that

my point is that 'dressy flats' is a thing because we are all conditioned to think we have to cripple ourselves to look smart

again, men don't need to specify 'dressy flats' because their smart shoes will always be flat anyway
