£100 in John Lewis what would you buy as a treat?

I’ve been given a gift voucher for £100 and don’t want to end up buying necessary kitchen items!
What would you buy as a treat for yourself from any department (home or clothing)?

Hush have some nice things in at the moment - some good dresses and summer wide leg trousers at around that price point.

parrotonmyshoulder · 21/04/2025 09:53

Thanks, yes Hush always tempting.
What would be a good bag? Any that would work for smart-casual for someone whose has never really been a bag person? Usually have a scruffy rucksack. Bag wouldn’t need to hold a laptop, just phone/ keys etc.

What kind of bag would suit you - cross body, tote, shoulder bag etc?

I find JL good for casual bags - my most-used ones from there are a smallish black leather own-brand one with gold hardware (great for a casual night out or can be a bit more formal), and a very old neutral leather Mint Velvet clutch with a detachable strap that's been very useful for weddings, christenings etc. MV tend to do a greige leather version of this every year.

Or how about a leather backpack? The Whistles and All Saints ones are normally closer to £250-300, but often JL have a heater own-brand one.

paristotokyo · 21/04/2025 10:10

I have a much smaller voucher to use and I’m buying an hourglass ambient lighting powder palette. It’s so expensive so I’d never buy it full price

GhastlyGoodTaste · 21/04/2025 10:16

I adore JL for kitchen browsing but don’t buy clothes there. Unless I desperately wanted specific cosmetics that they happened to have in stock (unlikely,) and bearing in mind your no kitchenware stricture, I’d probably put it towards a new radio. Possibly Ruark.

Maybe too retro for most!

parrotonmyshoulder · 21/04/2025 10:24

Maybe I should just wait till I can go
instore and spend it on cosmetics.

I would definitely buy a bag. You could get a nice tote bag to fit your laptop and doubles as an overnight bag.

GhastlyGoodTaste · 21/04/2025 10:35

Do you actually want or need any, @parrotonmyshoulder? I just bought a new ironing board (after 15 years of flawless performance from the old one) and it was £90. Plus delivery. I’d have been delighted if someone had given me a voucher to pay for it!

parrotonmyshoulder · 21/04/2025 10:42

We’ve just got a new iron. Tell me more about how the new ironing board will improve my ironing life!

GhastlyGoodTaste · 21/04/2025 11:04

😂 Now we’re talking!

After weeks of havering and lingering feelings of disloyalty to my old ironing board I finally committed to the Brabantia Model D Titan.

https://www.johnlewis.com/brabantia-titan-ironing-board-l135-x-w45cm/p3883059

(Costs slightly more at JL than Argos!) It’s huge (135 x 45) and can be set to a really high position, which I like even though I’m not tall.

I envy the excitement of a new iron! I bought mine 16 years ago from M&Spencer and (fingers crossed I’m not jinxing) it’s still working perfectly so I have no justification for another.

The only reason for the new ironing board is a complicated house move which means I won’t see the old one for a while. (Bought from Argos in 2009, it was the biggest and sturdiest they stocked, though I don’t recall the brand.) I couldn’t bring myself to buy a cheap stand in and had been managing on ad hoc surfaces over winter. But now I’ve had to relinquish my coat for spring I’ve felt scruffy without really well ironed clothes. The new one is a joy! I’d forgotten how satisfying ironing is on a really good board. (Other people’s ironing boards are invariably inferior; wobbly and narrow and insufficiently plump.) I spent the weekend ironing everything. And must remember to add spray starch to my supermarket delivery.

Honestly worth it!

Bjorkdidit · 21/04/2025 11:09

Spend it on food in Waitrose and put £100 aside for when you do decide what you want to spend it on.

mangomaggie · 21/04/2025 11:18

See I disagree with food shopping at putting it aside as I know i would never take the £100 back and if the voucher is for you then you should use it.
A bag sounds great. I recently had a voucher and got sunglasses but have had to return them as possible counterfeit BUT would have loved them as a treat. Perfume was my next option

GhastlyGoodTaste · 21/04/2025 11:22

Actually, thinking about it - an ironing board is definitely a Style & Beauty buy. Even the loveliest and most expensive clothes can look a bit rubbish if poorly laundered.

parrotonmyshoulder · 21/04/2025 11:38

Right, I’m getting surprisingly excited about the prospect of a new ironing board. I’ve only ever had cheap wobbly ones, although have a very good steam generator iron (as DH likes gadgets and bought it when our old one exploded last week).
I think this is it!

OP posts:
doubleshift · 21/04/2025 11:42

Sunglasses!

GhastlyGoodTaste · 21/04/2025 12:15

Excellent! Do look for one made to accommodate a steam generator iron - though not everyone finds them necessary. Essentially, get the best you can afford - paying particular attention to sturdy legs and feet. (It’s hard not to be influenced by a pretty cover, but don’t be.) There’s an MN article (not Talk) on best boards, and I read every article google offered, too.

Also be meticulous in ensuring it has not been warped or damaged during delivery. If it wobbles or is at all uneven on a flat surface, send it back.

Bjorkdidit · 21/04/2025 12:39

Now come on OP, you can do better than an ironing board. I thought you were looking to buy yourself something nice, not a household item.

GhastlyGoodTaste · 21/04/2025 13:31

It’s a wardrobe / grooming necessity, @Bjorkdidit. (And as you’ve stated that you don’t iron, you won’t understand the satisfaction of being able to do it using the best possible tools.)

bugalugs45 · 21/04/2025 13:54

John Lewis offer a price match , so if it in stock at Argos and it’s deffo identical report it and you’ll get the difference paid back , has to be reported within 7 days though

parrotonmyshoulder · 21/04/2025 14:24

The (extra wide) ironing board is not only a household item, but also an improving my clothes thing AND there is a lot of sewing going on in the house so also a leisure/ hobby thing.
I also ordered Hush trousers reduced to £25 so fulfilled that requirement too.
Thanks

£90 on an ironing board?
What makes it so special.

I also have a JL voucher, it might endup an airfryer, but it definitely won't be the Rolls Royce of ironing boards!

Needspaceforlego · 21/04/2025 14:34

Now i need to take that comment back, we have a brabrantia ironing board that came with the hubby, I had no idea how much they cost 😳, I think his mum might have bought it!

CluelessAboutBiology · 21/04/2025 15:55

Sandals for the summer

GhastlyGoodTaste · 21/04/2025 16:00

😝 @Needspaceforlego!

mangomaggie · 21/04/2025 16:01

@parrotonmyshoulder if your new ironing board will make you happy then it's a voucher well spent and actually I do , unlike many folk believe in ironing so I "get" it
