Clothes that don’t get holes quickly

Rubbish thread title, but I hope you know what I mean. I’m fed up of buying the perfect T shirt, tunic, top, only for it to get holes in it after a few washes. So far I’ve only got a Jaegar T shirt, which I bought in the sale after a recommendation on here, that hasn’t done this. I do sew up the holes, but would rather pay more (within reason) to not have to do this.

yes, I know this topic comes up often!

Clothes should not get holes, I’ve got tops, shirts, jumpers 10/12 years old and are still perfect. Probably are good quality like LKB, Hobbs, Ralph Lauren. Could it be your washing machine causing it or maybe moths in your wardrobes?

Summertimeblahness · 19/04/2025 09:27

Where are the holes coming from? Pegs, washing machine, hangers?

NineLivesKat · 19/04/2025 09:29

This really, really isn’t normal! Do you have moths? Are you using an aggressive washing machine cycle?

Thesheerrelief · 19/04/2025 09:46

This happens to my t-shirts too. Particularly ones from Hush. It's usually around where I tuck them into jeans

henlake7 · 19/04/2025 09:59

I agree....this def sounds like more of a care issue rather then clothing brands.
Are you sure you arent washing or drying 'aggressively'? or as previous posters mentioned, moths?
(I have a collection of £2.50 Poundland t shirts that have survived multiple washes in perfect condition.)

Tanyaaah · 19/04/2025 10:00

If you do up all metal zips before washing jeans etc you should stop getting holes in t shirts, seemed to work for me!

Tanyaaah · 19/04/2025 10:01

And don't buy "slub" jersey, it's absolute shite.

pizzaHeart · 19/04/2025 10:03

I think it depends on various factors. I have problems with particular thin fabric near the trousers belt. I started spinning them less and washing them separately but I suspect that you can’t avoid it 100%.
M&S had this problem with their T-shirts some time ago, it was holes all over after a few washes but they seemed sorted it.

RentalWoesNotFun · 19/04/2025 10:08

Holes in clothes? What the hell is that all about? I never get holes in clothes. Apart from when the cat digs claws into me.

Are you washing jaggy things like studded clothing or underwires bras or something? Where are these holes appearing?

I’ve never heard the likes. Apart from really old clothes like eight years old or something that wear into holes. I use laundry net bags to wash anything that may cause problems and do up all fastenings. Underwires bras go in themselves in net bags on wool wash cycle.

Could you be using too much bleach or detergent or something. All very weird.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 19/04/2025 10:13

Agree with everyone else. I have clothes which are years old and no holes.

Thesheerrelief · 19/04/2025 10:15

Tanyaaah · 19/04/2025 10:01

And don't buy "slub" jersey, it's absolute shite.

Now you've said this I realise all my t-shirts that have holes are slub jersey!

VanWeezer · 19/04/2025 10:18

Are the holes near the button on your trousers?

If they are you need to get some button covers

I used to get holes at the bottom of t shirts but this has sorted them

LoafofSellotape · 19/04/2025 10:19

I can't remember the last time any clothes had holes. Must be a care issue.

cheapskatemum · 19/04/2025 15:33

Thanks for all your responses. You’ve given me some things to think about:
• Definitely not moths, as they would have left holes in jumpers and cardigans too.
• I do zips up & turn clothes with zip pockets etc inside out. I also use mesh bags for items that would be likely to cause problems eg sequins. These get washed on a gentle cycle.
• I’ve Googled slub jersey & this might account for some of the items with holes. I shall avoid this fabric in future.
• I don’t use bleach.
• I will invest in some button covers as I didn’t know these were a thing and some of the holes are in that area of garments. I notice that other holes are at the back, against where my bra fastening is. I hadn’t considered hooks & eyes were to blame, but this might be the case.
• I usually use the “mixed fabrics” wash setting & wash at 30 degrees. However, I’ve been spinning at 1,400 so the clothes dry more quickly. I could try reducing the spin speed.
• Some items are probably 8 years old & that’s fair enough.

Here’s to fewer holes in the future!

Forgot to say that underwired bras get washed in bra-specific mesh bags, so not to blame either.

I’ve had a couple of holes recently, usually low on front so maybe my jeans, it is so annoying even with so called good quality stuff and also a shirt placket where I need to sew up where is has split.

I think it’s the quality of stuff rather than care as it used to be unheard of

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 19/04/2025 15:51

Check how your clothes rub against zips when wearing a seat belt. My clothes don't hole, but I consciously pull clothes away from seat belt / waist area .

cheapskatemum · 19/04/2025 16:46

That’s a good idea @YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME
similarly, the back of the car seat must cause my top to rub against my bra fastening. That one’s not so easy to remedy though.

needsnewartsyinsta · 19/04/2025 16:52

I’ve seen previous threads on this - it’s usually where jean’s buttons rub against t shirts, especially when you are wearing a car seat belt - the rubbing is always in the same place and causes holes. I have this because I have some clothes that are 20 years plus old. Newer items are in poorer quality. I absolutely love cotton slub t shirts but they are terrible for this - a thicker cotton stands up better

notwavingbutsinking · 20/04/2025 00:02

If you are getting holes around your waist at the front and you have granite/quartz worktops it is almost certainly that.

cheapskatemum · 20/04/2025 16:57

Thanks @notwavingbutsinking, I do. That still doesn’t explain the holes at the back of garments though.

It’s occurred to me that the fashion for high waisted jeans & skirts & cropped tops will work in my favour. Plus, I can tuck slightly longer tops in. Here’s to longer lasting T shirts 😀
