Should I keep or return this Mac?

Hoping for a bit of advice as in two minds over this purchase. Have ordered this checked Jaeger Mac from m and s. I love the fabric - it feels very high quality and the check is lovely with the beige/ green / black. I do think it is a lovely coat, but would look better on me shortened to knee length and will need to go to a tailor. Looking to canvas some opinions on whether you think it is worth doing this. I usually steer away from print, so I think that is adding to my uncertainty over the coat. Have tried with trainers, jeans and a pale green cashmere hoodie and it looks good. But good enough to pay for extra tailoring? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Well TBH I do not like it!

If you love it then get it tailored.

Happyearlyretirement · 19/04/2025 09:26

I love it, I’m short so get lots of my clothes tailored, it’s not expensive and worth the better fit.

No structure around the waist so if big-boobed you’ll look fat. But if you’re slim/less boobage
it is probably a better fit.

If you love it and think you will get loads of wear then its worth it to get tailored.

Im not a fan of the boxy look with plaid. All my plaid coats are either belted or come in at the waist which I prefer. Mine all also come from Vinted!

I like it but I know what you mean about the length.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I like it - so think it would be worth tailoring to suit you.

In truth I wouldn’t be bothered by length, but I bought a gorgeous overcoat from the men’s section of a well known store in the autumn, and the buttons are all in slightly the wrong place for my proportions. I’m about to have it altered for next A/W. I can see that with your coat the lowest one or two buttons might be more than you need - and could be removed.

It’s difficult to say without knowing what you look like because we don’t know whether or not it would suit you. I wouldn’t buy it for myself, but I hate beige.

Thanks to everyone for your input.
I am blond and slim/midsize. I take on board what is said about plaid and no waist tie, but I would be wearing it open with a visible belt on my jeans. It does look quite boxy buttoned up on the model.
I have decided to keep it and possibly not to alter it. Daughter and daughter in law were round today and both were very positive about it (and I know they would give it to me straight if they didn’t like it). They thought it worked without alteration. Daughter has just bought the Clyde trench from Sezane and says she prefers the look of this Jaeger one. It’s a considered purchase for me at that price point so I am grateful to hear your opinions.
