I'm turning 35 this year although it's considered "young" to some I'm feeling very mature (most of the time 😂) I'm both ADHD and autistic so I'm a bit of both mature and immature depends on the situation. Anyways today I put some liquid foundation on it's what I've always used never had a problem till today, I looked in the mirror and it's flakey and I've noticed I itch my forehead a lot I do prep my face before hand which has never been a problem the itching has only just started so why now?.

I'm wanting to be brave and stop using it altogether, it feels like one more chore with the rest of my day to day chores, question what can I use to give me a natural glow and help make my freckles pop?, I think as for powder and foundation it'll be used only for occasions, I feel more breathable without the stuff on my face. Any suggestions please?

I have 2 DDs with AuDHD and they both sometimes want to wear makeup as it can provide a literal mask that helps their confidence occasionally, but they also both find it restrictive and onerous sometimes too.
And regardless of neurotype, we should all feel that our face is ‘enough’. You don’t owe anyone makeup.

That said, you might find something like Erborian’s CC crea,m quite satisfying. It just comes in a couple of shades, emerges from the tube looking white and little pigment spheres burst on your skin as you rub it in. You can rub it in completely haphazardly with your fingers and it just provides a bit of life and evening out to your skin but it’s easy to remove, non-drying and your freckles won’t be camouflaged.

Absolutely this, I use makeup to build up confidence but it gets to overwhelming and itchy like it doesn't belong. I love my freckles like most don't but I do it gives my face pizazz 😅. I'll give that a go see if I like it, I'm just done with caking my face with foundation I'm wanting to brave the natural look. That and it's the chore of doing it everyday.

I have ASD and I don't like the feeling of makeup particularly. I used a tinted SPF or a BB cream very lightly applied with my fingers. I think the SPF has benefits. I'm very pale and it makes me look more 'well'. Then I just make my eyebrows neat and tidy and put lip balm on.

Britneyfan · 17/04/2025 19:21

BB cream/CC cream is what you’re after, maybe more BB cream if you want to see your freckles clearly. One with SPF ideally factor 50 is ideal for your future skin’s benefit! I hear good things about Erborian. I loved the Chanel CC cream but they’re “reformulating” and it’s now impossible to get. I agree with you, I basically stopped wearing makeup about your age after pregnancy - stopped in pregnancy as I felt so awful and then had PND and basically just never got round to restarting it. After a while I decided I just couldn’t be bothered with it except for special occasions, I would rather have a bit of extra sleep! And don’t like the feel of makeup on my face anymore.

I've heard about the BB cream but never tried it, I think I'll go down that route with the spf and see how I feel, aslong as it doesn't feel tacky I'm done with sticky feelings. Thank you.

I did say to my partner I think I'm at the age were I'm happy in life that I no longer need to doll myself up that and things are starting to overwhelm me makeup being one of them, I'll give the BB cream with spf a go

I second the recommendation for Erborian cc cream. Total game changer.

Order it directly from their website (after signing up for their newsletter as that gives you 10% off your first order) as they will then send you some free samples - I chose the 2 lightest colours of their cc cream so I could work out which one suited me best before opening the big tube (you can send it back if unopened if it's the wrong colour after trying the samples).

It's lightweight & works like magic. Gives a bit of coverage but with a natural looking glow.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 18/04/2025 09:33

I forgot to specify that it is the Erborian cream I use. It's really nice and there are often offers £££

Berrycrush · 18/04/2025 12:26

If you're after glow more than coverage, I really rate the Saie Glowy Super Gel for no-makeup days: https://www.cultbeauty.co.uk/p/saie-glowy-super-gel-30ml-various-shades/13321953/?srsltid=AfmBOopxRgEzTDZtVLyFXtmmy_DWikVpASRSiprewKFBZyy41nS6c8wV I'm also mid-30s and pale with freckles. Have tried all of the shades - my favourite is Warmglow.

Ficklebricks · 18/04/2025 12:39

I went makeup free around my mid 30s. I'm sad to say that I noticed the difference in how I was treated at work. I feel like people take me less seriously. I still wear it for job interviews but I think people are quite shocked when I turn up for the first day of the job, sometimes I get comments about looking tired. 🙄

I wish people would fuck off and let women exist in their own skin. If more of us do it then society will get used to how women really look and there will be less judgement, but it requires a lot of converts and the trend doesn't seem to be catching on.

Dodoland · 18/04/2025 14:10

Fellow AuDHDer here and I massively reduced the amount of make-up I wore in my 30s too as I started really resenting making my skin feel uncomfortable just to look more acceptable to others. I use a BB cream with SPF (though tempted to try CC on the basis of these comments) but aside from that wear nothing on my face except a little brow pencil (90s plucking casualty) and occasional mascara and loose powder if I feel like more of a "mask" that day.

I'm very introverted but have a mouth on me so if anyone treats me differently just because I cba to make myself look different then they can jump ☺️. I get you though I noticed today my first day out without makeup and this one woman pulled an ick face, except I didn't let it slide I told her that if she kept pulling that face she'll forever look like a smacked arse, like we are suppose to bigging each other up not making one another feel like poop because we want to feel comfortable in our own skin.

Next time someone says you look tired just turn around and tell them "so do you but I didn't want to say anything, you ok Hun?" They soon stop 😂.

Spinderella2 · 18/04/2025 17:26

I can’t remember ever pulling an ick face at someone not wearing make up. In fact most people don’t wear it where I work.

Anyway a good one is Lisa Eldridge skin tint, feels like nothing on your face, evens out but won’t totally cover things like freckles.

SwedishEdith · 18/04/2025 17:36

How do you know she was pulling a face at you? She might have been thinking about something else while just happening to look in your direction.

Because usually when someone is looking directly at you and pulling a face whilst having a catty response clearly not shy to say I had acne on my cheek (I heard her) and laughing with her friend that's how you know. At the end of the day we all piss and shit the same, to belittle and make someone feel less of themselves because they choose to bare it is pretty vile.

SwedishEdith · 18/04/2025 18:59

Well, she sounds like a dickhead.

I've switched from tinted moisturiser to a tinted balm from Revolution. I like it plus it's cheap.

Fedupandstressed · 18/04/2025 20:51

I use the By Terry CC serum. Comes in about 6 shades, but I use Sunny Flash and makes me look glowy but without that foundation look. Also sinks in beautifully so I don’t get the itch. Also Benetint for a little flush. It’s not cheap, but you can get travel sizes and also on Vinted. I currently have about 3-4 bottles as I panic that they’ll discontinue it, like they did with Tea to Tan.

I bought the erborian BB cream and the cc cream and im absolutely in ore with them, cc cream helps with my red patches on my face and the BB cream gives me light coverage I'm satisfied 😊 thank you for the recommendation.

I haven't worn make up since I was 30 y old (45). Can't stand to have anything on my skin, I feel dirty. Occasionally I will put some mascara on if I look tired but that's it.

Deathraystare · 24/04/2025 16:40

Can't offer any help but I am finding this fascinating (sorry not trying to be patronising!). There is a neurodivergent household I follow on you tube to try and understand things better. I know the woman wears eye make up but not sure if she wears face stuff. Basically whatever you are comfy with, you should be comfy in your own skin, I believe. I don't bother much with foundation now except on the rare occasion I go out but I do love make up.

PauliesWalnuts · 24/04/2025 16:44

I bailed on proper base about 5 years ago. Now I just use a good mascara, a light dusting of Bare Minerals powder in the winter or a little spackle of gel bronzer on my cheeks and nose from April to November, and tinted Vaseline on my lips. I’ll never use proper foundation again.
