Best root touch up

Hey ladies,

Anyone who has lots of lovely greys coming through thick and fast, can you help me?

I am starting to see grey growth in my dark blonde (slightly highlighted hair), about 2 weeks after I go to the hairdresser. I want to extend the time I have and want to try root touch up. I see the sprays but they seem to also cover the parting too. I have read mixed reviews about wow powder and it seems expensive to try if it’s rubbish.

Any recommendations or reviews? I don’t mind spending more if the product is amazing.

I've recently started using Josh Wood Root Smudge. It's like an eye shadow that you dab onto your roots with a little brush. So less chance of it staining your parting.

It's not perfect (the 'brown' is a bit too warm for my very ashy natural colour) but it covers the greys well and is easy to apply. I can't remember what it cost but was definitely cheaper than coulour wow. I got it in Boots.

The Josh Wood Root Smudge sounds convenient, especially with the brush applicator. I like that it’s less likely to stain the parting. I’ll check it out next time I'm at Boots.
If it covers greys well, that's a big plus! I appreciate you sharing your experience.

I use a mix of the Superdrug version of the spray and the mascara wand type. I think it’s about strategically spraying to avoid parting if that makes sense

slamdunk66 · 16/04/2025 23:29

I use the L’Oréal one and it covers greys well on my dark hair. Just don’t touch it after you’ve sprayed it!

tobee · 17/04/2025 02:25

Yeah the sprays are not bad! I found the mascara like ones too sticky.

If you leave the spray for a few minutes you can brush the hair which helps with the distribution and looks pretty natural

I use the Wow colour on my Auburn coloured hair. I find it good. I use two of the colours on my head. It lasts a very long time as you use so little.

I am short so everyone sees the top of my head!

I think I would get a spray everywhere.
I have seen advice online though to place a piece of string over your parting before spraying to protect it. You could tie a bead on each end to weigh it down?

StarTwirl · 17/04/2025 07:22

I use a Superdrug one - it’s a perfect match for my dark blonde hair and covers my roots perfectly when required

ChangingSocks · 17/04/2025 07:24

Watch your clothes if you use the spray as it really stains and is impossible to get out.

I use the spray but put a cotton bud over my parting to preserve it

Colour Wow. It's a powder you dab on with a brush. Goes on really well, feels normal, doesn't transfer everywhere, covers really well. I have used sprays on the past and hated them due to the mess and feel.

Sunholidays · 17/04/2025 08:22

I use color wow in dark brown and a skewer over my parting line to keep it clean :)

SwanOfThoseThings · 17/04/2025 08:25

I use a normal box dye and mix a small amount in a glass bowl to do my roots -as long as you reseal the developer and colourant, it will last weeks like that and is much cheaper than buying a root touch up kit.

westcott · 17/04/2025 09:22

I use a clariol one which is the eyeshadow type. It is a so useful to get through those last weeks before the next appointment

I need a whole box of normal dye just to do my roots

do you mean you just do the top of your head

Top of head and round the edges. My hair is quite fine and I don't quite need a full box even to do my whole head.

Another vote for Colour Wow. I have blonde highlights but was recommended to use my natural colour (shade dark brown) to match root re growth. Very impressed, used to use the sprays but won’t change back to them since finding this, more precise.

I have had a revelation with the l'oreal spray (as I just posted on another thread!)

I decided to try it on wet hair the other day, I had very white roots, so I washed hair and parted down the middle and sprayed it, then did a couple of partings either side and sprayed those too. Then I dried it, there was no staining on my scalp and it looked fantastic and lasted til I washed it again! Also it didn't transfer if I touched it. I don't know why they don't suggest using it on wet hair

Years ago when the colorwow one first came out I tried it and it was so messy and transferred all over the place, has it improved?
