What’s your summer uniform?

I spend a lot of time on here given how boring my outfit choices are! Mum of 3 under 8, so time- and energy-poor. Not so cash-poor but love a bargain.

I feel I sorted out my winter wardrobe finally, with a selection of jeans (mom-jeans or whatever they’re called, bootleg / flare, skinny, jeggings) and jumpers, mostly Uniqlo.

I have no idea what to wear in summer though. It also needs to be quite warm for me to actually feel hot, sweat I run cold. What is everyone going to wear from May onwards??

I wear longish dresses in summer mainly, find that the most comfortable. Either with converse style trainers or birkenstock style sandals. I'll wear jeans and a t-shirt with sandals if it's less hot. Got a couple chunky cardigans if it's chilly and a couple of light jackets.

henlake7 · 16/04/2025 08:56

I imagine I'll be in short dresses or skirts and jumpers with opaque tights for a while yet (I also run cold!).
If it ever gets really hot then I swap to maxi dresses or maxi skirts and vests with hi/low top trainers instead of boots.

In the past I have been one of these stupid women who have 2 or 3 really expensive items in their wardrobe e.g. Reiss Jumpsuit, Mint Velvet maxi dress and never were them because I am not going anywhere flash. Then, on my everyday catwalk around town, school and out and about, I look like a scruff bag in jeans and T shirt or jumper picked up from my floordrobe.

This year though it's different. I've lost weight and I went into a few high street better value shops like Zara, H&M and Mango. I've bought items that are £20, £30, and max £40 for a Zara dress. In my head, because I know they weren't expensive, I am not keeping them for best. I am wearing them, and as a result I am much better turned out that I normally am.

I am not buying anymore clothes this summer as I think I have enough to get me through. I've bought 3 casual dresses, a pair of wide leg cream jeans, wide leg blue jeans, a tailored pair of caramel trousers, a knitted cream waistcoat and a T shirt.

I’ve tried to buy decent items eg. recent-ish jean purchases were Levi’s. Think I need some lighter tops probably, to go with them.

My summer uniform is basically cotton or linen maxi dresses. I wear a denim jacket or fluffy cardigan on top if the evenings are cool. I also like to wear nude coloured cotton shorts underneath my dresses to be extra comfortable.

Footwear-wise, I go for white leather court trainers, strappy sandals, or a pair of espadrilles.

Absolutely none of the types of clothes I adore - heavy coats, tweed jackets, thick knitwear, woollen kilts, cable knit socks - have any relevance to summer, so I’ve never managed to adopt a reliable warm weather style. I might buy a dress if it’s unavoidable (generally a dangerous and embarrassing waste of money, not because I don’t like dresses - I do - but because I’m always drawn to things that are way too extravagant and fanciful for my everyday life) but mostly I’m to be found stomping about in just slightly lighter weight skirts with vests and clumpy boots and a huge piece of knitwear as backup.

I have often felt that a person past 60 ought to be able to find a way of looking more svelte and put together in hot weather, but fortunately the individual items are lovely so I’m often surprised by unexpected compliments, even when I feel a complete mess.

Chinos and tshirts or linen shirts over a vest top. A few tshirt dresses.

Following as I desperately need some inspiration. I retired a couple of years ago and slouch around the house in trackie bottoms and sweatshirts. I used to continually wear jeans but they're uncomfortable now so looking for a substitute.

I have just swapped over my winter and summer clothes and wasn't very taken with what was on display.

Standard British summertime - jeans & boho style top.
Particularly loving Rose & Rose at the moment. Or something in cotton gauze.
Actual warm weather- cotton/linen dresses in various shades of brown/tan/terracotta or white, black.
Maybe a bit of Crochet/pointelle.
Always flip flops, often flatforms.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 16/04/2025 12:17

Dresses. Then depending on the weather, either boots, Birkenstocks or trainers.

EmotionallyWeird · 16/04/2025 14:07

I'm probably a lot older than you (let's just say I have 2 children under 30!) but I tend to go for linen trousers (wide or baggy), scoop-neck t-shirty tops with elbow or 3/4 length sleeves, sometimes stripy, sometimes not, and occasionally linen or cotton cocoon dresses or short A-line dresses over capri length leggings. Either sandals or some kind of Converse/Rocket Dog type canvas shoes. Currently quite liking my cheapo clog-like shoes with Birki type soles from Deichmann, and thinking that when they're past their best I might upgrade to the real thing.

I wear a lot of black, dark blue, taupe, cream and this year I'm quite into light/lime green and coral.

Squirrelsnut · 18/06/2025 18:13

I'm 5'8'" size 14ish, 52, and I wear maxi dresses in linen and cotton, or loose linen trousers and tops. I've found that more subdued colours and patterns look more chic (well, the nearest I'm ever going to get to it..)

Y2ker · 18/06/2025 20:40

Here in the UK- midi/ maxi dresses and maxi skirts and really light cotton jumpsuits with a vest underneath.

European holiday- all bets are off and the coolest thing possible. I sometimes even wear shorts as it is just stupidly hot. Some looser vest tops.

AhTheFuckening · 18/06/2025 23:04

I'm rubbish at summer, I think winter might be my spirit season.

I just bought lots of V neck cotton slub t-shirts from the White Compamy - the Vs are really deep, and I love them. I have 5 now.

And I have some Fat Face denim shorts, a pair of Finisterre short dungarees, and 2 pairs of Passenger lightweight dungarees.

God, I hate summer. And dresses.

BusterGonad · 19/06/2025 01:09

I wear the same really, just swap the jumper, thick t shirt for a summer blouse, thin t shirt, knitted t shirt and a crochet cardigan. Occasionally I'll wear a dress, like a tea dress style or shirt dress.

The Uniqlo long dress with no sleeves. I have it in several colours. You can leave it as it is or you can dress it up for work with a belt and a jacket. I have tried to tie one of my DM silk scarves in a triangle around the waist, and it looks fabulous. Fantastic value and it dries in a few hours.

Rina66 · 19/06/2025 06:29

I’ve just bought these two very fine cotton tops to wear with boyfriend jeans and this linen jumpsuit in navy….I also love a co ord with a vest top underneath

In this weather summer dresses, loose vest tops with a skirt or shorts, sandals.

In cooler weather chinos, linen trousers or cargo pants with T shirts and a jumper or cardigan, socks and trainers.
