Uneven bob - what’s reasonable by way of complaint!

I’ve had my hair cut for the first time in 14 months (gap due to pregnancy sickness and having a baby). I’ve had my usual bob cut back in, except it’s wonky 😩 I just have a straight blunt bob, but one side is lower than the other. It’s very noticeable. I had the haircut on Sunday and the stylist added some waves, so I didn’t notice until I washed and dried my hair just now. So sad as I was looking forward to wearing my hair down for first time in over a year, and I have events coming up.

I’m looking for advice on what’s reasonable to ask the salon for now. I don’t really trust the person who cut it to do it right a second time. It was an expensive cut (£90 - London prices, I know) and I also don’t want to have the experience of going back and just having one side fixed. I guess I’ll have to though. I would rather a refund and go to a different salon now. Thoughts and advice?

Thanks in advance from a very sad mum who never does stuff like this for herself usually, of course it gets messed up 😩

Just call and explain and ask if someone else could take a look at it and fix any issues. Be polite but assertive. You aren’t happy but you need to allow them to put it right.

(I never let them curl mine for this reason.)

Thank you! I will never let them curl it again, you’re so right

Take a photo and send it to the salon. I think it's only fair you allow a more senior person to try and fix it? But if it was a senior/owner who did it that badly then I think you could say you want a refund. I'd imagine they'd rather give that than you leave bad reviews.
Is the person who did it someone you've used before?

I had this before. Went back and said I wanted a refund because I didn’t want them to touch it. Went elsewhere and they sorted it

It wasn’t the most senior stylist, no, so I can ask for someone more senior to fix it. Argh, I find these things so awkward 😐
I haven’t used the hairdresser before, but I have been to a different branch with great results. Maybe I’ll ask to go back to the other branch

Email the branch you visited, send a photo and tell them it's easier for you to go to the other branch and you'd like someone senior there to sort it. Much less awkward

I know it's a bit cringe but if you don't say something you'll feel resentment. I think the senior should be allowed to try and rectify it.
Hope you get it sorted x

This is the perfect solution. No need to go back and feel self conscious you're asking for them to put their poor work right, and you'll feel more comfortable with someone who's done a good job before. The distance of a separate branch means it's much easier to be thanking someone for fixing a mistake that wasn't anything to do with them.

Lagirl20 · 15/04/2025 10:29

Thanks all, I will email and share the results here, fingers crossed for an appointment at the other branch with someone more senior

Absolutely contact the salon with a picture and suggest a solution.

Just a question, did you have your legs crossed while your hair was being cut? It can affect body alignment and make a cut uneven. I’m a former hairdresser and this is something we were taught in college, and we were told to check how clients were sitting before starting a cut. It’s surprising how many stylists don’t do this though.

Edit - I’m not blaming you though, it’s not something you think about unless you’re told.

I might have had legs crossed! But hairdresser said nothing and I’d hope that with their 10+ years of experience, they’d know this and spot it but on this occasion, no

This is why I cut my blunt bob myself. Last time I went to the hairdresser (as a treat) I honestly couldn't tell the difference between my cuts and hers!😅

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/04/2025 22:27

I look after my hairdresser’s social media and marketing as a side hustle - he owns the salon/manages the staff and would FAR rather someone (politely!) complained than was unhappy with their hair. If guests don’t give feedback then mistakes can’t be corrected, and guests are the salon’s billboard!

I know my hairdresser has stepped in himself on rare occasions when someone has been unhappy with a cut by a more junior staff member, and in one case where the client’s colour just didn’t really take very well even though his prices are very high in comparison.
