How long do jeans trends usually last?

Bought a pair of wide leg jeans, love them and woukd like at least one more pair. However I know I won't wear them very often in the warmer months.

I know nothing about fashion and trends, so thought I'd ask the wise ones here! How long are wide leg jeans likely to remain current? I can't justify buying another pair if they will be horribly out of fashion by October, but it seems to me that e.g skinnies were the thing for years.

@springbringshope - off the top of my head - Vera Wang, Hilary Clinton, Steve Jobs, Angela Merkel, Carolina Herrera, Kors, Lagerfeld, Armani

If you are referring to the designers own style, of course they have changed. Take Carolina herrera for example.
she evolved from 70s chick to 80s baggy pants and patterns to the start of her white shirt look through massive shoulder pads to more firm fitting suits. All to keep to her style but with consideration of what currently was on trend.

@luckylavenderand as for Giorgio Armani, he has totally changed his look depending on the current zeitgeist

Of course he has. He’s a designer. He’s hardly going to be stuck in the past. His style has evolved as anyone with style does.

@springbringshope - I bet you're fun at dinner parties!

LostWithoutDottyP · 16/04/2025 20:39

I hope it’s a long long long time. It felt like forever when skinny was in. I literally can’t get in them, unless the waist is like clown trousers I could put a hula hoop in. There were years when I took 14 pairs into the changing room and came out with nothing every time. When I had to spend hours searching on eBay and pay £50 a pair and then if they fitted I bought three pairs the same and stashed them. It’s traumatic. Long live wide leg!

Shubbypubby · 16/04/2025 21:46

I wore extremely baggy jeans in the late 90s/early 00s and am just too traumatised by how impractical they were. I’m still in skinnies and can’t bring myself to deviate from them when they’re so perfect in every way.

I still wear skinnies on rainy days. I just can't bring myself to go back to soggy legs.

That’s a very typical response from someone who is wrong but doesn’t have the strength of character to admit it. Instead of just going ‘yep, I’m wrong’ you deflect by making personal insults.

very typical small person behaviour

This. That is why skinnies lasted so long and I don't think baggies will for too long. Ultimately they're more practical

Shubbypubby · 17/04/2025 22:17

@Tbrhi agree. Skinny jeans go so easily with all footwear- trainers, boots, heels etc. Same as leggings which I also live in 🤣

Shubbypubby · 17/04/2025 22:20

Wide leg/baggy/flares trail along the floor and get dirty/wet. Can get far more wear out of a pair of skinny jeans. Can also wear baggy or tight fitting tops with them. I will heart them forever! Might age me but I’m 44 and don’t really care.

strawlight · 17/04/2025 22:28

I just wish they stop with the high waists, I have a short midriff and they practically meet my boobs.

tillyandmilly · 17/04/2025 22:33

Wide leg jeans will be in for many more years - I have 6 pairs and they are my staple for spring summer months - I don’t follow fashion- however I love wearing them and find them flattering on my legs as I have wide bulky knees !

You know there are a whole lot of jeans that fall between wide and skinny don’t you?
You could just wear straight leg and look less dated. Or when wide leg jeans are looking dated (which they will at some point) people can wear straight leg if they dislike skinny

it’s not super wide or super skinny

springbringshope · 14/04/2025 19:56

Yes yes we know that we can wear what we want but some people like to look current. To be truly stylish you need to understand both what suits you and what is current. No one wearing outdated clothes ever looks stylish even if they really love them.
understanding trends means you can rest some of your out dated styles for a few seasons and wear the pieces you love that give a nod to what’s current. That’s why truly stylish people look good.

You’re confusing style (timeless) with fashion (transitory).

HighLineGal · 18/04/2025 07:08

Classic styles never go out of fashion. The timeless French Blue jeans in a straight leg or boot cut… always chic. Think Parisian.

As for wide leg? I intend to wear mine for a long time yet. With my trainers and little jackets in the warmer months or long wool coats in winter.. They’re just so comfy.

I looked on various magazines for you. Skinny jeans aren’t making the comeback we were promised. The wider leg is en vogue. So go for it!

luckylavender · 18/04/2025 07:26

@springbringshope - really whatever. If you want to carry on being told what to wear by 'fashion experts' constantly chasing the next thing, fill your boots. I've worked in the industry, it's vacuous & self centered in the extreme. Been there, done that. Life is too short. Be an individual.

schnubbins · 18/04/2025 07:32

I have always worn palazzo type trousers .They were hard to find before but still around .I am tall so they suit me and I always feel more comfortable in them .You just have to find the right fit of wide leg for your height and body

Only if they're too long for you. Any style jeans will do this if they're too long.

Nope. Nothing literally nothing is forever. Blazer? The blazer shape is not the same now as it was in the 70s, 80s or 90s and if you are wearing the ones from the wrong era you would not look stylish. Jeans? Nope as seen in this thread there is no such thing as a forever in style jean. When skinnies came in there were screams of ‘noooo. Not on my fat legs’. Then when they went out ‘nooooo. They are classics’ now they are coming back in will be some other lament.
any style will have its current twist. You don’t see women walking around in 1940s suits or men in 1970s clothes and think yeah, so stylish. They look like they are in costume. What you think looks classic today will not have been worn 25 years ago in today’s shape because todays shape is what it is down to fashion.

yes maybe a blazer and jeans and flats. Because they are classic. But they aren’t the same Blazer shape, jeans cut and type of flat as 25 years ago. Because of fashion.

If you think you are individual then you are kidding yourself

Everyone is influenced by fashion whether they think they are or not. If you really had worked in fashion you would understand this.

our behaviours are manipulated by trends in every aspect of our lives. Fashion itself is affected by economic trends and world events such as war, austerity and bust or boom

if you had worked in fashion you would know this.

TheChosenTwo · 22/04/2025 19:17

I’ve just treated myself to a classic pair of straight leg jeans (and a wide leg pair to replace some that were too big), they are a really perfect pair of jeans - kind of 80’s and I bloody love them!
I do love wide leg jeans too but the straight cut of the other ones are what I’ve been missing. Skinny’s never felt right to me and I’m glad to have shaken them off!

luckylavender · 22/04/2025 20:57

@springbringshope - are you accusing me of being a liar now? Because you mention it twice. Really?

Why do you keep talking about being a liar? You seem very sensitive. What is that saying about protesting too much?

I have no idea what you do or don’t do. But you seem fixated on being a liar. No one else has called you a liar. Why do you keep banging on about being one?
