Hi all

I know this question will have been done a million times before but I'm struggling to find anything recent.

I'm really struggling to work out what style suits me and wear to shop. I'm around BMI 29 (although people are always surprised when I tell them that). I'm quite stocky and muscular, with a largish tummy, thighs and the distinction between my neck and chin is becoming less clear as I hit my late 40s.

I've been avoiding spending much on clothes as I've been planning to lose a stone for about a decade.... I'm not giving up on that, but I'm fed up of wearing things that don't flatter me, so need some better clothing until/in case I never get that far.

What does suit me: long floaty skirts, but I struggle with what top to wear. Wide led trousers - I know they should drown me but they look good.

Tops are a struggle. Tshirts are convenient but make me feel so dowdy (m&S basic ones at about £9). I've historically not got my arms out but I'm more relaxed about that now.

I have had my colours done, so it all about shape really.

Can anyone recommend me any brands, preferably on the high street? Or have any other pointers?

Budget is okay. Maybe £40 tops, up to £100 for dresses.

Thank you.

What is your body shape as that may affect what type of top?
often with that style of bottoms you are better off with more of a fitted top?
a wrap top may look good?
you could pick up a few different styles on Vinted and see what works for you.

Hi Fanjo. Thank you. Yes, I think you're right. Shape is big boobs, not much waist. I'm quite broad generally.

What strikes me is that you could counter the general softness of your outline with crisper clothes. And tonal dressing. It would give more zing. This is the sort of thing I mean:

Thank you Glamour that would be completely different for me.... I'm not used to tucking things in, that would be interesting.... Thank you for the idea. I love the crisp/soft idea...

Actually I don’t feel things must be tucked in.(Do whichever feels natural.) But I do think that shape of top would give you a fresh, sharp silhouette. It should be slightly oversized as in the photos, not the smallest size you can get into. One strong colour from neck to toe. (I say this but rarely manage it!)

Have a look at the rest of American Vintage. Also

Uniqlo
Cos
YMC (You Must Create)

And for inspiration on shapes and proportions:

Studio Nicholson
Rohe

I’m the same height and size 12-ish. For a summer’s day sleeveless top I’d probably choose something like a Margaret Howell vest - in a size to hang away from the body, not cling to it. I’m a fair bit older than you, but to me that seems a more modern way of dressing.

Thank you so much Glamour for taking the time to message. A few years ago I could be found head to toe in Uniqlo, I should try it again... I'm going to follow your tips.
