Help me find a "cocktail dress"

comoatoupeira · 13/04/2025 15:34

Dear mumsnet,
I'm going to an evening summer party (40th, big evening do with a band) and the dress code is "cocktail dresses", which makes me think of my aunt on a cruise in the 80s eating a maraschino cherry from a martini glass.
I think they mean "evening gown but not floor length, probably colourful". It's quite posh, and indoors and evening, so not your average summer party where you would expect to be outdoors and wearing something floral, realistically covered up with a jacket.

Budget: about £300, ideally (much) less, would go upwards for the perfect dress.

Because it's indoors I don't need to worry about warmth, can be skimpy in theory but I'm not sure how good that would look. I want something fun to dance in that feels elegant but not too high fashion.
I am early thirties, size 10, need to wear a bra but it could be a light one. Definitely a bra though.
Hourglass but waist isn't what it was. Even though I'm slim it's not a "looks good in anything" situation, I like clever structuring and draping and good fabrics and proper underwear. I don't want anything that's like a slip dress or a nightie.
Short-ish legs, long torso.

Necklines that suit me:
boat neck
cowl neck
v neck if the straps are wide
strapless with strapless bra works well
sometimes spaghetti straps but it's hit and miss, and I don't want to look too Gen Z trying to do the nineties.

Colours that suit me (dark blonde, blue eyes):
oranges, pinks, reds
navy
yellow
probably others if I tried them, I'm a bit set in my colour ways.

Thank you for your help and I'll answer any questions quickly.

@MoreRabbit where would you get your palazzo pants?

Really love this in theory but would rather pay more and have it not in polyester...

One of these maybe? From your description the pink would look great. I know the red is long but as it’s sheer hoping that would still work?

Great ideas but I want a lower neckline. I like the gradient though.

Don't have any suggestions but just wanted to say that your OP should be enshrined as best practice for all future S&B 'help me find an outfit' requests. You covered all the bases - budget, colour, style, context, shape. 10/10 no notes.

Also try searching The Outnet, again the filters are useful.

Couldn't find any good co-ords on net-à-porter

How about this one - a modern take on party dress. Great colours.

thank you, I love the designer and have a pal who looks amazing in her, but very much the wrong cut for me I think

absolutely love this one! V curious about whether green would work on a blonde though.
It looks a bit frumpy from the back, doesn't it? But amazing from the front. I love how it ends just over the shoulder blades.

I love it too… but sadly on someone else…I wish I had the confidence to carry something like this. I would do admire the person wearing it!

Amazing detective work. Is this your job?? If so you have a customer.
I think I'll just get it anyway for the summer.

I love a bit of internet detecting 😁 although I'm giving away my (trade) secrets by saying I saw in the comments on the Pinterest post that someone said it was Zara, so I went to Vinted and sorted for orange Zara tops et voilà. (My confidence in Vinted is unshakeable!)

In terms of having something made, my mind jumps to some kind of co-ord set - partially because my friend had a lovely one made for a wedding, as a sort of flared midi skirt and a sort of boxy sleeveless top. In the right fabric that might be a good option, as you get more rewearability with separates, I think.

CaptainFuture · 13/04/2025 21:42

Would you look at vinted? This bnwt wolf and badger dress is lovely!

et voila! yes vinted is so good for finding old stuff.
Thank you. I can sort of visualise what you describe! Wish I knew a good dressmaker.

I think with dresses it's good to be able to send back... but this one is great. Thank you!
Can always resell I suppose. But a faff.

Not one for me but I can imagine it would be perfect on the right person, and ideal for the dress code for this, I think.

For me it looks like a vagina!
Which could be cool for the right sort of event.
Too many uncles at this one 😂

You might like something from the new John Lewis AWAKE range. This dress, for example - though personally I’d have to put a clashing cerise cami underneath the open back bit.

Thank you @SoScarletItWas I love this! But what on earth do you do about a bra?
I’ll have a look at the range.

Thanks why I’d have to put a silk vest or cami underneath!

Couple of ideas from The Outnet, both well within budget and you get 15% of for signing up to their mailing list. The orangey one is Badgely Mischca and the pink is Rotate Berger Christensen

Thanks again I’ve just ordered these

I would go on Vinted and look for better secondhand dresses than what £300 will get you brand new. Genuine designer and in fabrics such a silk rather than polyester. Possibly look at Valentino, Emilia Wickstead, Giambattista Valli, Dolce & Gabbana.
