Mid-40s new skincare regime recommendations

I’ve never paid too much attention to skincare and been fairly lucky. However after losing some weight recently I definitely see more lines and think I need to start paying more attention.

I use a L’Oréal cream cleanser, toner and sanctuary spa hylauronic moisturiser cream.

What would people recommend doing going forwards? Things like retinol or collagen just feel a bit complicated but I think I need to start paying more attention! I would like to be a bit more glowy but don’t want to be spending more than say £30 a month max on toiletries. Or is that just not doable?

Any recommendations for brands or specific products would be great please!

Spf 50 first and foremost, find one you are happy to wear everyday.
Once that's sorted a retinoid of some sort either over the counter retinol or retinal pr prescription strength.
Geek & Gorgeous os a great budget brand for peptides, vitamin c, retinal

If you can afford £25pcm get the liberty beauty box. You get a box of sample sizes every 3 months so you can try lots of things. And £20 of that rolls into credit vouchers so you can buy full size when you find something you love.

If I could do only two things, I would start tretinoin (gold standard skincare medical grade) and spf50 daily. You can get a. Subscription for tret online via dermatica or skin&me but I buy online now from alldaychemist and it’s really cheap so I stock up. Start slow on the 0.025 every third night, then go to every second night after a couple of weeks and so on until you’re using nightly.

@Powderblue1 I’ve just been looking at Alldaychemist what payment method do you use for them

Powderblue1 · 16/04/2025 09:28

@TheOliveFinch Ive paid by bacs. Ive ordered three times from there now. I normally do a batch purchase and get enough to last me 18 months or so and I order for my mum too. Bonus is if you order more its cheaper too

@Powderblue1 thanks for the info , I’ve just tried to do this and it wants me to turn off vpn or proxy did you have to do this

Powderblue1 · 16/04/2025 11:01

No I dont think so. But proxy is location settings I believe so mine may already be disabled as I have good privacy settings. Presumably because its prescription and not technically supposed to supply to UK thats why?

(Just asked my colleague at work whay vpn and proxy mean as I didn't know! Ha)

Consistency is key. Do not chop and change products, find ones you like that you know you can afford regularly.

Cleansers I wouldn’t worry too much about, just needs to wash off make up.

Simple moisturisers like Cerave, unfragranced.

SPF 50 essential, there are a million in Superdrug at the moment.

Tretinoin, covered by PPs.

They’re the basics. You can add sorts in like niacinamide, Vitamin C, salicylic acid, snail mucin, hyaluronic acid, but that’s where it gets more complicated and more expensive.

@Powderblue1 I tried to make an order via Alldaychemist yesterday and pay by BACS , and unfortunately got a phone call from the fraud team at my bank who picked it up as suspicious so ended up just cancelling it. I know many people have ordered from them with no problem but my bank wasn’t happy so having to try other options it is a right pain.
