teenage acne advice

Hi,

my DD14 has some acne on her face, mainly cheeks and t zone and although she uses Cerave blemish face wash and a skincare routine it’s not helping.

we tried acnecide gel for the problem areas, but her sensitive skin hasn’t liked it.

it isn’t bad enough to the dr as it’s mainly black heads and small spots and is most likely the usual teenage acne and hormonal too.

any other recommendations on what we could try to help clear it up that isn’t too harsh.

she does exfoliate although this could be more regular and uses face masks but again could be more regular.

the issue is that her face is now getting dry and then the makeup cakes - not that you can tell but she can and it’s getting her down.

last year she was poorly for a few months with viral fatigue after a few viruses and the dr prescribed a face wash and cream as her skin was really red, dry, flaky etc. so she can use this again to help calm it down as looks like the acnecide has reacted a bit. I know this can happen but best not to continue and she only used it once.

any words of wisdom on what could help?

I took my dd13 to dr as her skin was upsetting her and they prescribed a cream with antibiotics in. It’s really helped. Would definitely recommend a GP appt

I’d recommend a GP appointment. I’m taking my 11 year old tomorrow as he’s started with it already. We’ve tried over the counter stuff and it’s not worked. I don’t want him starting high school and being immediately bullied for it. Hopefully they will prescribe something!

Have you looked up the NICE (I think) guidelines @Frightenedbunnyso you have in your head the right things to say/ask for?

The absolute best thing for my skin and now my son’s skin (16) is Epiduo. You need to use it every day and it doesn’t show full effect for a few months. My son’s skin was truly awful and now he has nothing at all.

it is drying so you have to persevere, and you need to be rigid about applying it and then have the patience to wait three-ish months.

Ask for doc to prescribe…

Thanks for all the suggestions

I have considered the dr but it would be seen as minimal really so not sure they would suggest anything on prescription.

Will see if there is anything over the counter that can help.

suspect it is hormone driven and her cycles are still varied in length which I’m sure isn’t helping

Try a cream called A313 on the areas that she is getting spots, It’s like tretinon but a bit milder, it’s fairly inexpensive and you can buy it on Amazon,
On the days she is not using it get her to put Lactic acid ( The ordinary) on her skin, it is a very mild acid and should open the pores and remove dead skin cells

I do have acne and I will share my routine if that helps:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
Garnier spf
Evening:
Cerave moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel
