Party wear at 40?

What to wear to a party for someone who lives in a daily uniform of jeans a top (except for work when it's black trousers and a top/blouse) and needs to hide unsightly lumps in their mid region (medical issue pending surgery) & the inevitable mum-tum?

Size 10-12, small bust and protruding bum.

I'm leaning to a maxi skirt and plain top but is that a bit boring?

What sort of party? All night rave or tea with royalty.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 10/04/2025 23:50

And budget.

Bailiwitch · 11/04/2025 06:14

So much information on perceived physical shortcomings. None at all on context or budget?

(I’m sorry about the issues with your middle, @Teapleasemilknosugar. Though I can’t imagine anything more uncomfortable than jeans to wear in such circumstances.)

Bailiwitch · 11/04/2025 08:13

It really does depend on the type of party, and your milieu - for some places you might be overdressed in a t shirt that isn’t washed out grey. But I’ve just seen this site on another thread and was rather taken with this co-ord set:

https://mariadelaorden.com/en-gb/collections/all/products/capri-skirt-green-blue-stripes

Unless the dress code is extravagant I’d be inclined to wear only one half - either the top with a plain but louche skirt or trousers, or, slightly dressier, the skirt with a simple cropped T shirt - cotton or cashmere or mohair (if the weather allows). And mesh ballet flats.

(I don’t mean cropped to display one’s ribs - just closer to waist than hips.)

Or this

I'd go Massimo Dutii and depending on the party
long flowing and orange to get the comfort on the stomach
or this is surprisingly flattering on the stomach grey trousers and top as just a bit different from a skirt and top

Bailiwitch · 11/04/2025 10:31

Prefer this

Massimo Dutti dress for a party.

Though both should work for the OP.

Think boozy evening reception sort of party. Neither rave not tea with royalty.

Budget is flexible.

Since when is body shape and a medical condition perceived shortcomings? Let's not go down that totally unnecessary route 🙄 I'm happy with my bod (discomfort and pain aside).

Edited

This skirt is gorgeous 🥰

Makes me think of mermaids.

I think the skirt and a simple top would be perfect. Thank you!

It’s a pleasure.

However - do read the section on shipping carefully. The actual shipping price from France is negligible - but customs duties aren’t included in the price. (I haven’t looked to see if there’s any UK stockist - there may be.)

Good point. I've just seen that Liberty's is a stockist so I'll take an outing to London first.👌

Im your age. I think wrap skirts are great for covering bumps and I like them with a fitted high neck top, with or without sleeves. I also love blazers with a plain top underneath and jeans with heels and nice jewellery.

Thanks! When you say high neck do you mean like a crew neck type top, as opposed to a plunge/v neck?
