Foundation settling into pores and fine lines - any advice please?

I was reasonably happy with my foundation until I looked in the mirror with my reading glasses on 😱. Pores like craters with foundation absorbed in and where I have fine lines (say nose to mouth) foundation caked. It was like looking in an extra strong magnifying mirror! I’m mid fifties and yes, I have some lines but thought they were fine, probably have a loss of volume in my face.

This is probably a ridiculous question but is what I see with my glasses on what everyone else sees or are others seeing what I see when I stand back from the mirror which is makeup lightly applied and looking okay. If it’s the former, then what do I do to fix it? I can’t go out looking like this!!!! Help!

Primer - a good one that doesn’t roll.
Dusting of translucent fine powder over top when foundation dries.

I found powder very ageing and stopped using it years ago.

At 66 I just wear tinted moisturiser.

I had this with my long term foundation- I spoke to someone on the No7 stand in Boots and I now use their Hydraluminous foundation and have noticed a big difference

Also pale with uneven skin tone and large pores here. My skin verges on oily and sometimes blemished so I try to go for non oil based products. I use Revolution Super Dewy tinted moisturiser. Goes on a bit weird but after a minute or too settles and looks lovely. I use Revolution IRL filter foundation for any blemishes / under eyes. Then bronzer and blush. Lightweight and fairly cheap!

I agree with using a primer. Im currently using the Dr Brandt pore no more one (or something). Sometimes the pore mimimising primers can take all the shine and glow away from your skin which is no good once you are past 50 as that's what makes skin look youthful. So I only use it round my nose and chin. Make sure you let it settle in for a few minutes.

I don't use foundation but instead use a skin tint with serum in it (currently just a Revlon one) and concealer.

Not much powder although if you need one the By Terry Hydraluminous powder is excellent as it doesn't dry your skin. I've.never used better. She invented Touche Eclat so she knows her stuff!

A good trick if you notice that your makeup has caked in the day is to use a small.fluffy eyeshadow type brush and very gently do light circular motions on it. It will even things out without taking the make up off.

A good facial tan is the overnight one by Isle of Paradise. Just get the light one..I've not messed that up yet and it's very subtle. Better that than warming your face up with make up.

I've found the Pixi range really fab.
I wash with pixi mud facial glow
Pixi glow tonic

First layer
Clarins Cryo flash cream mask
Second
Clarins double serum
Third
Clarins super restorative day cream
Fourth
Clarins flash balm used since my 20s cannot live without product.
Fifth layer
Pixi H2O skin tint love it lasts ages .

Spritz of clarins sun care water mist factor 50 on top.

Skin has always been oily large pores but im the happiest I've been with it now age 53!

Don't know if any of that is correct but it works for me.
I'm not a sun person so really don't go out in it if I can help it. Tend to go for early evening walks rather than midday. And always wear a hat now!

I don't think people can see your pores so much unless they are really close up. But I always look at people's lines and colour of their skin. I've always been prone to redness but some people just have dull dull skin.
I would rather get my laters on and glow through the day it's my baseline of satisfaction feeling like my skin is in good condition for my age after having spots from the age of ten till in my early twenties and always lacking skin confidence.

@Sunnysummerstheres a woman called Face Yoga expert on YouTube who has a lot of short videos so you can pick and choose - I also massage for lymphatic drainage because I find it helps with my sinusitis.

I’m 64 and have always had noticeable pores on my nose. I use one of those 12x magnifying mirrors which are great cos u see everything but also a nightmare - cos u see everything ! Also have those v fine lines from mouth to chin (never smoked). I’ve been drawn into buying so so many foundations, serum foundations, powder foundations over last 5 years - my stock could rival Boots. I think hydration is key, both internal and external. Prone to dry skin but use Dr Sam, Elemis, occasional exfoliating toner, Medic8 and EL night serum, Bobbi brown primer and just use colour corrector and Benefit concealer and get complimented on my skin condition - but my 12x mirror still says differently. Going back to self tan drops and seen a lot about that Milk hydro gel thing so may try that now. Agree less is more - especially as I overheat easily

The worst thing is looking down on a mirror. I find I get younger and younger as I raise my mirror upwards!

These days I can't quite see everything clearly due to needing specs, so my skin looks great to me! Magnifying mirrors are banned in my house.

I used to have the same issue but now I use a MAC primer, Trinnys BFF and a bit of concealer and it’s loads better. Skin looks more glowy now than cakey 😊

Using this technique has really helped me. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNdFdN9fV/

I am mid 50s. I use Estee Lauder day wear and in the summer apply Guerlain multi coloured powder with a big brush. I find it goes on well over sun cream. I use retinol at night but aim for hydration always. A primer just causes piling. I use a coloured lip balm, Sisley eye shadow that sits on skin well and go light. I used lancome for years and suddenly saw my my face - yikes!

Primer can cause piling depending on the type of foundation you use. I think there's an issue with some combinations depending on whether the foundation is water based or not. Primers are usually silicone based. So some work well together and some don't. Someone with greater knowledge on this can hopefully say which is which! It's all a bit hit and miss sometimes!

I use a primer as I hate the shiny look round my nose and chin! Rodial is good. Or Dr Brandt.

FartNRoses · 13/04/2025 17:46

Look for a blurring primer. This will help even the pores and your fine lines.
I also moisturise before I put the primer on.

anon666 · 14/04/2025 11:13

I think I'm missing something with primer. Every time I try it, it just ends up being a floating layer which rubs off like dried copydex glue.
What am I missing?

The older I get the less foundation I wear, preferring tinted moisturiser or that Trinny woman’s BFF stuff. IMO it’s so obvious on people’s skin

This. I was a double wear girl all the way until my late forties, then found it looked really cakey.

I now use tanning drops in my moisturiser as a base and apply a light foundation. Currently using number 7 lift & luminate.

(my spellcheck thinks luminate should be laminate. This may have made me laugh).
