What to wear in Oman

We’re moving there for a few years for work and can ship a limited amount of things over. Which could include clothes for my 13 yr old and I if it’s better to shop here.

I’m happy to dress conservatively but will probably need to buy a lot of new stuff as I’m usually a minidress kind of girl. I don’t want to wear an abaya every day if it’s not necessary so if you’ve lived there or been there - what do foreigners who want to be respectful wear?

It's been 10 years since I've lived there, but you don't need to wear an abaya or anything close.

Wide leg trousers, maxi skirts etc are your friend. The general rule for day to day would be knees and shoulders covered. So for example, a pair of culottes and a tshirt would be fine. They have all the same clothes shops, Zara and H&M etc that we have, don't over think it.

Stay away from very tight clothing, it's both seen as disrespectful and it's sweaty.

That’s good to know, thanks. If maxi’s and t shirt are fine then that solves the problem

Oh I meant to say as well, cardis, light jackets etc are a god send you would be surprised how cold the air con can be in some places. I'm sure you will love it, it's a beautiful country with wonderful people and not nearly as bonkers as their neighbours.

I’ve heard that about the air con. I’ve also heard that lots of people use duvets as the air con in the bedroom is chilly!

25 years since I lived there. My mind is blown that they have H&M and Zara 😅Of course it makes sense, but when I was there people used to get very excited for the annual trip home to stock up from M&S.

I also used to take jumpers because (as @Snail01 says) the aircon in offices, malls, taxis etc are freezing cold. It’s seen as a sign of affluence.

There’s a Matalan, an Ikea and an H&M 28 mins drive from my new house! I’m not shipping anything now!

All I need are a few pictures and personal bits and I can clearly buy anything else I need. 😆
