LED Face Masks-what do you use & hints & tips?

I’m in the market for an LED face mask-budget £300 ish so just wondering what others are using? Am looking particularly at Shark atm.

How effective are they? Am thinking I’ll
need to use several times a week?

For reference I’m mid 50’s with the usual fine lines and sun damage spots - I’ve had a few spots lasered but another appears nearby!

Any info would be great

I got this one for Christmas (it’s cheaper than it was as there is a newer version available now) and I absolutely love it. It’s definitely made a visible difference to my skin. Even my dad who is totally oblivious to most things, not at all into skin care etc, and had no idea I was using it commented that I was looking younger all of a sudden.

I’m mid 40s with fine lines, rosacea and melasma (pigmentation) and it’s worked brilliantly for making my skin look clearer and younger (was a bit worried initially about it possibly making my melasma worse after reading into it a bit more as apparently sometimes the heat from these masks can trigger it though this mask does not get noticeably warm).

I use it for the automatic time which I think is ten minutes 3 times a week which is what they recommend.

The only downside is that it only does red and infrared light, if I had bad acne I’d probably want one that does blue light too, and I wish this one had green light, but couldn’t find a decent one within my budget (like you this was right at the top of mine!). Also it seems to dry my eyes out but I suffer from dry eyes anyway. I just have to put my lubricating eyedrops in afterwards no biggie. Oh! And I’ve noticed it seems to make my insomnia worse if I use it late at night but that might just be me imagining an association as everything I read seemed to suggest it should theoretically help promote sleep if anything!

Also you have to be patient to see results from LED masks, it’s supposed to take about 4 weeks to start seeing a difference and 12 weeks for maximal effect. I will say I started seeing a difference maybe within a fortnight or so though.

Britneyfan · 04/04/2025 09:33

Compared to the Shark I think I decided on it because I didn’t really need the blue light as I’m lucky not to suffer from acne. And I wanted a flexible type mask ideally. But the Shark looks good too!

BlueBlueBerries · 04/04/2025 09:49

Definitely recommend Current Body. I have the upgraded version 2. You do need to use it regularly to see results. I’ve been using it about 5 x a week since October and I’m definitely now seeing clearer skin, less redness, red marks from spots healing much quicker.

it’s not something you get instant results from but with time you definitely see improvements!

Smallfry79 · 04/04/2025 10:11

Im interested in this also.
I have rosacea Ana a very very dark red nose.
I am 45 so also have other signs of aging creeping in too.
I'd probably have a smaller budget but if the extra pounds made a big difference in quality I'd be tempted.

I have one friend, who has good skin anyway, that uses one and really thinks it makes her look fresher.
I've read they are excellent for inflammation also.

I have this thing on my head, would an LED mask help or make it worse? Ive heard current body is a good brand...

Dancetildawn · 04/04/2025 11:36

Thanks for your replies; I’ve also looked at the Current Body masks & Boost ones, need to make up my mind!

I dont need a blue light-no acne scars etc & read somewhere that it can cause hyperpigmentation or at least make it worse.

@Gemini29 I have a few of those spots-due to sun damage (had a couple
lasered) and am hoping the LED light mask will reduce their appearance & stop further ones appearing.

I’m thinking of getting the Dermalux arc, from Current Body, which is salon quality, but nearly 2k. If you’ve got one, was it worth it?

Tret or salicylic acid would help that

Gemini29 · 04/04/2025 17:24

Thanks @Bignanna !

I've got that one and I do think it's more effective than the current body own-branded one, but it's big. If you have a place to set it up and leave it, it will probably get used more than if you have to drag it out and set it up every time. It's also supposed to be 30 minutes, which is just too long for me - I'm not great at lying still. I try to use it for 10 minutes 4-5 times a week. My rosacea is gone, but I'm not sure it's completely attributable to that.

Just popping back to say the Shark LED is ordered-arriving tomorrow.

However I have another question, do you still use face/eye masks ie sheet masks/bubble masks etc? Am currently sitting here with my energising eye mask on trying to counteract the effects of a late night last night!

NeutralBee · 06/04/2025 21:06

You should use the mask on clean skin then you can carry on your normal skincare after.

I have the shark and love it!

Funnily enough I use a sheet mask after my led session.

Please get that checked out before you put anything on it. I have a similar-looking patch on my arm, and tried various things on it over the years before casually mentioning it to the GP (it had itched when I inadvertently got some of my HRT Oestrogel on it). A recent biopsy revealed that it’s a particular skin condition (Bowen’s Disease); the harmless-looking patch of skin is actually a lesion needs removal as it’s pre-cancerous.
Yours is very likely to be nothing, but it’s worth getting it checked.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 07/04/2025 10:09

Listen to this. It's been ages since I heard it but they discussed their efficacy and I vaguely remember them deciding they didn't work?

Ooh how very timely I am thinking about one of these esp for the lines on my neck. Ladies with the face mask only does it benefit your necks or do I need a separate mask for face and neck?

Branster · 07/04/2025 20:40

@spinningisthebest there are some specific for neck treatment.
And for hands too! Foreo does one.
I'm waiting for the all in one all over body version before investing.
Joking aside, my understanding is that the more 'light points' the mask has, the more effective it would be.

Airfryerdelight · 24/05/2025 18:07

Am also thinking of the shark one but then also wondered about ones with blue light as have teenagers. But then is it wise to share these or not? I know I would get acne and hsve very dry skin but could it cause problems for them?

Toinette · 24/05/2025 22:12

I bought the shark mask a few weeks ago. I do think my skin is already looking better. The fan and eye-cooling is a great feature. However, the under eye plates are heavy and I feel I have to support the mask or it drags my face down (and I have used the adjustable straps). Something I missed was that you can’t do the under eye area with the LED because of the plates. I’m thinking of purchasing another for the eye area only.

Airfryerdelight · 28/05/2025 11:47

Also does anyone use eye goggles with these or some eye protection?

Dancetildawn · 29/05/2025 07:27

I purchased the Shark mask in the end and have managed to use it pretty much daily so far.

I agree with @Toinettethat it does feel heavy with the eye plates (which are a great feature) so I spend a bit of time
fiddling with it or just lie down.

Overall after 6 weeks I feel my skin is looking brighter but haven’t noticed a big difference wrinkle wise yet.

I use the bioluxe led facial mask! I chose it over others because it’s got 8 lights plus infrared . Wireless and has voice controls ( didn’t want to be plugged into a socket) and was decently priced. I’m chuffed with it for it from www.bioluxeuk.com

Many have found they do! However get a good quality one as cheap ones are a waste of money. Ones like the Current body mask fulfil required criteria.
