Okay... I am about to buy a very expensive pair of trousers, gift from my mother - Do I need to wear a belt with belt loops??

Really love these trousers and have NEVER bought anything this extravagant, so loving getting them as a gift...

Key question - Would you wear them with a belt? (If so, I need to buy, as not got the right colours) Or better without?? I don't want to detract from the beauty of the trousers....

loveyouradvice · 02/04/2025 11:47

that's strange - it's showing up on mine...I'll try another way in case it makes a difference... here goes

oh and SECOND question - what colours would you wear with them apart from cream and camel (and navy, but that's not really me)..

I prefer them without the rather loud belt in the photo. And quite like the waistband. So I’d be inclined to try them as they are first. Belts aren’t in short supply if you later decide you want one.

Comefromaway · 02/04/2025 11:53

I would wear them with a belt, but not one as distinctive as in the photo on your link.

MissPrismsMistake · 02/04/2025 11:53

As to colours - try them on with everything in your wardrobe. Sometimes the most surprising combinations work.

CortadoPlease · 02/04/2025 12:10

I hate to be a downer but if you don’t have colours/styles of tops and accessories that work with these (very beautiful) trousers, they might not be the best purchase 😬. If I’ve ever bought an outlier of an item (say, because of the colour) that doesn’t work with my existing wardrobe, it seldom gets worn regardless of how beautiful it is as a stand-alone item.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 02/04/2025 12:11

It mostly depends on how you plan to wear them. Do you want them to sit low on your hip, at your natural waist or higher? Either way and depending on how you wear them, can be worn with or without a belt, or even with a scarf looped through the side of the waist (if they need tightening).

Hoppinggreen · 02/04/2025 12:12

Do it!
Depending on what else you would wear them with I would suggest a slim belt in navy or even white, possibly tan BUT no belt would also work

DGPP · 02/04/2025 12:14

I love them but would wear with no belt to show off the waistband

Trovindia · 02/04/2025 12:17

I would probably wear them without a belt, but if I were going to whereabout it would be a plain navy or tan one.

Ask for what to wear with them. I consider camel and navy to be neutral colours so I would wear plain coloured tops like an emerald green or red.

Smallmercies · 02/04/2025 12:21

Congrats on your gorgeous trousers!! I agree with PP, treat it as neutral and wear with red or green. Enjoy!

Floisme · 02/04/2025 12:36

They look great. I always wear a belt (normally a tan leather) due to my waist-hips ratio so I'm kind of bemused at the question and also envious! But try without first.

I don't see the need to stick to navy or cream. I'd probably wear them with a strong colour, not necessarily bright but a deep red or green etc. But as other posters have said, I'd experiment first with what's already in your wardrobe.

AlertCat · 02/04/2025 12:45

Nice! Belt- if tops tucked in, yes, because waistbands tend to fold over when you sit down.

Colours- anything. Pink, olive, yellows would be nice and also red. I’d avoid anything in blue, but you could go as far as teal I reckon.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/04/2025 12:54

Red!

crazzynut · 02/04/2025 12:56

They look like pjs.
But if your happy with them thats all that counts.

MissPrismsMistake · 02/04/2025 12:58

It’s true that ideally you’d be excited about them because you can see a million things you already own that they’ll go with beautifully. But all wardrobes need a re-set occasionally, so 🤷‍♀️.

They’re definitely giving sailor (HmmGrin) so my first thought would be a weighty, cropped red jumper. (Margaret Howell did one last season with buttons at the neck. Still kicking myself … ) Alternatively a shrunken white t shirt and a huge shawl collared cable knit cardigan. (If you have about £1k spare go straight to Begg & Co.)

I’m sure you could replicate these looks at a more comfortable price!

What was your reason for making this comment? I can't see that it added anything positive, or had any purpose at all other than to try to make a stranger feel slightly bad. Why?

OP, I love the trousers and agree with the comments that many colours would work. I'd like a darkish red, I think!

KnittedFerret · 02/04/2025 14:04

@LoveDandelions , because it's a forum. FWIW, I don't like the trousers either, and if the OP doesn't know if she needs a belt with them, then maybe she might want to re-think.

Panicatthegarden · 02/04/2025 14:13

I love these! Colour wise I'd be pairing them with olive green, burnt orange, burgundy red and mustard yellow although I do wear these shades a lot so I'm probably biased😂

Worth very little, I would say because the question wasn't 'Do YOU like the trousers?' The question is: Do they require a belt?

I think they look fine without a belt.

I agree that a strong colour would look great with them. Choose whatever suits your own hair/complexion.

Bignanna · 02/04/2025 14:17

They look nice but why so expensive, made of a viscose mix?

KnittedFerret · 02/04/2025 14:27

They look better with a navy top.

Unrelated but I like this:

Ecocool · 02/04/2025 14:58

I think trousers without a belt, when there are belt straps, look unfinished.

OP I'm sure you will be aware that you will only wear these for a very limited time because of their pattern. You will get fed up of them so quickly and next year you'll give them away.

I like the style but would only buy them in a plain colour. They are very expensive for the material they are made from.

W0tnow · 02/04/2025 15:03

I absolutely adore them and am considering buying them.

I vote no belt.

MissPrismsMistake · 02/04/2025 15:17

They are very expensive for the material they are made from.

I don’t think they’re outrageously priced for something stylish and well cut … I would personally hesitate to buy viscose trousers because they could start to look shabby all too soon if not carefully worn and looked after. However - not everything we buy must be strictly utilitarian. A garment that brings genuine joy and enlivens your wardrobe and your day is worth whatever you’re willing to pay.

If the OP wears them on repeat this year and feels great doing so - what does it matter if she gives them away next year? They may bring equal delight to the next person who owns them!
